Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! Welcome back to another whirlwind of pink and pirouettes on the Pink Tutu blog. This month, we’re waltzing back to February 2nd, 1741, a date filled with ballet history and, dare I say, some unexpected fashion inspiration!
As you all know, I'm a massive history buff, and when I discovered the wonders of time travel on the back of my fabulous pink sparkle-covered Shire, Magic Meg, I just had to share the excitement with you! Magic Meg and I love to explore the past, and this month, we're back in 18th-century Europe, the birthplace of the ballet as we know it. I’m always searching for ballet-inspired trends for my everyday outfits and to see what ballet is like in different eras. The world of fashion has always been fascinating, so combining that with my love for ballet is a true dream come true.
You’ve all seen the photos on my Instagram, of course – my gorgeous pink tutu with all the frills, worn with my sparkly white blouse and ruby red ballet pumps! This look is as much an homage to the French Court Ballet of the late 17th Century as it is my everyday outfit. My look this time was definitely influenced by the Ballet of the Court of Louis XIV, with my love of pink. What can I say? It just makes me feel confident and powerful. After all, what's a tutu for if it doesn’t inspire some magic, eh?
As I galloped back through time on Magic Meg, she was adorned with an exquisitely woven, pink-toned satin blanket with a delicate floral print, making a majestic entrance as always. Oh, did I mention she has golden hooves and a white flowing mane and tail? Her pink sparkles always look magnificent against the backdrops of historical moments – even in snowy 18th century England!
Arriving at the bustling town of Bath, England, on February 2nd, 1741, I instantly noticed a ballet buzz. As we strolled through the elegant streets, my eyes widened at the sight of beautiful pastel-toned gowns fluttering in the wind, ladies carrying elegant fans, and gentlemen sporting elaborate lace cuffs. It was truly a ballet of a time gone by. The city was bursting with activity and the news that renowned Italian dancers were touring and putting on performances across England – and even a performance in Bath at The Theatre Royal was an incredible spectacle! It made me long to have witnessed these exquisite productions, a true taste of European grace!
I knew my time was short, but I had to experience this moment of theatrical ballet history first-hand!
Stepping into the elegantly adorned theatre, the stage was a whirlwind of colour, light, and laughter. I instantly fell in love with the grandeur of the historical ballet performances. From the vibrant hues of their costumes and intricate steps to the infectious joy on their faces as they twirled and leaped across the stage – it was truly magical! It reminded me of why I loved ballet so much, not just for the movements and elegance but for its historical value too.
To this day, The Theatre Royal in Bath still stands proudly. In the grand, baroque style that echoes this historical ballet time. We are lucky that so many buildings from the 18th and 19th Centuries are still here. When I get back home I am going to make sure to take a visit.
What made this time-travelling trip extra special was my discovery of a forgotten dance academy. Tucked away down a cobbled alleyway, its walls were painted in a pale blush pink (you know how much I love pink!), it felt like stepping into a bygone era of elegant and delicate artistry! This academy offered lessons for the most distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the town. It’s hard to think that today it might only be ballet schools for children, not adults, right? There is something quite romantic about the notion of adults dancing, just for the love of it.
Of course, I couldn't resist trying on some of the costumes stored within. It was just incredible to experience these intricate pieces – such stunning silks, lace, and frills, truly embodying the artistry and beauty of the time! Some were just so, so different to what I wore - think more elaborate headpieces with a feathered design!
As I carefully placed a vintage ballet booklet from the Academy into my rucksack – filled with historical dance lessons – I felt truly lucky. This little relic will be the perfect addition to my collection of historical dance trinkets from across the centuries!
I truly love my time-travelling adventures. If you’d like to join me for one, be sure to follow me on my Instagram or TikTok – I'll be posting a little ballet routine inspired by this 18th Century dance, to show you just how impactful those intricate steps were! After all, learning from history allows us to truly honour it by staying creative. You never know who will find your blog and start following their dreams of dancing, with a bright pink tutu in hand! Remember, every single one of you has the potential to be a shining star. Trust me, and you won’t be disappointed!
Love, Emma
