Hello my lovelies! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travel! This month we’re waltzing back to September the 9th, 1741. Magic Meg is all ready and gleaming, her golden hooves barely touching the cobblestones as we step out of the Derbyshire countryside and into the bustling heart of…well, where exactly are we? Let’s grab our ballet slippers and get investigating!
My rucksack is practically bursting with excitement as I strap it on. Imagine, darling, a time before pointe shoes! Can you picture it? A world where dancers twirled and leaped without the assistance of these miraculous creations? A world where a pink tutu would truly stand out!

Before we step into the 18th century, let's look at the global ballet scene as it was on this very date. The year 1741 was a time of tremendous innovation and excitement in the world of ballet. The first professional ballet school had opened just 21 years previously, sparking a flurry of creativity and ambition across the continent.
In Paris, a young Jean-Georges Noverre, later dubbed the 'father of ballet', was making his mark. Though he wasn't yet a star, this visionary choreographer was challenging the old order, pushing boundaries and shaping a future that we can all appreciate today.
Across the channel in England, ballet was still evolving, though a distinct English style was emerging, focused on elegance and grace. A particularly noteworthy dance company was 'The Queen’s Theatre' – it wasn’t all tutus back then, mind you – but the elegant and theatrical performances were certainly captivating audiences!

As Magic Meg ambles towards our chosen destination – London! – my mind is brimming with ideas for my time travel fashion diary! You see, darling, 1741 was a pivotal year for ballet fashion! Though a little different to our current styles (just imagine a dance class in 1741, in those floor-length gowns!), there were some dazzling looks! Elegant silk and velvet dresses, opulent jewelry, and intricate lace were the order of the day, and these delicate fabrics provided a luxurious and flowing silhouette, perfect for those graceful, courtly dances.
You know, I wouldn't be surprised if this historical period was the inspiration for a particularly striking ballerina costume I saw on a recent stage in Covent Garden. The swirling skirts, the flowing silk… It was a true tribute to this elegant era.

Reaching London, we find ourselves surrounded by a lively throng of carriages and street vendors. We pause, taking in the sights and sounds, letting the 18th-century world wash over us. But this is a blog post, darlings, and it wouldn’t be a Pink Tutu Time Travel experience without a touch of whimsy and a sprinkling of glitter!
Now, for the pièce de résistance… A sneak peek into the life of a fashionable ballerina in 1741! Imagine this, darlings: the lights dim in a grand, candlelit theatre, the stage is adorned with lavish costumes, the orchestra strikes up a playful tune. There you have it, my dears! You are about to meet a talented young woman who was part of a very famous ballet troupe.
Her name? Marianne – a beautiful ballerina with an ethereal grace and a heart filled with a love for the dance. Dressed in a silk bodice and shimmering skirt, adorned with pearl necklaces and intricate hairpins, she glides across the stage. Every pirouette, every leap is executed with precision and passion, drawing the admiration and applause of the entire audience. She isn't wearing a pink tutu…but I wonder, if she were to see one… Perhaps then the colour pink would become an accepted fashion for dancers!

We are here to discover her story, darlings. Maybe, with Magic Meg, we can even take her back with us to see how a pink tutu looks on her, or maybe introduce some elements of pink to her ensemble! After all, every dance deserves a touch of magic!

We'll be venturing into the royal court, enjoying theatrical performances, maybe even stealing a peek into some fascinating ballet classes – it is, after all, 1741, so it won't be quite the same as what we know today! We'll be back next month with more stories and fashion secrets from the past.
