Hello my darlings! Emma here, back with another delightful journey through the fabulous world of ballet! It’s a chilly December morning here in Derbyshire, but my heart is ablaze with excitement as I prepare to time-travel to a very special date – 12th December 1741.
This particular date has long held a special significance in my ballet-obsessed heart. Why, you ask? Because on this very day, the world of ballet welcomed the luminous dancer, Marie Sallé, to the stage! A woman who wasn't afraid to break the mould, to rewrite the rules and redefine beauty in dance. Let’s travel back in time and meet this trailblazing dancer!
As usual, my trusty companion, Magic Meg, is pawing at the stable door, her sparkling pink coat shimmering in the winter sun. Today she’s wearing a brand new pink braided mane and tail - just for the occasion! It’s not every day one gets to travel to the 18th century, is it?
Before I hop onto Magic Meg, a little bit about myself: I’m a ballerina who moonlights as a time-travelling ballet blogger (the most fashionable kind, of course). I fund my time-travel by performing at local theatres and events – my passion for ballet literally lets me take myself to the world's greatest dance studios, centuries ago! I post a blog every month on www.pink-tutu.com, where I share my stories and experiences with all you lovely ballet lovers.
Magic Meg neighs impatiently and I climb aboard, settling my pink velvet rucksack firmly on my back. It's filled with vintage dance ribbons, delicate shoe buckles, and faded programmes. I even have a silk scarf belonging to the famous Anna Pavlova. Imagine how wonderful it will be to add some 18th-century memorabilia!
As we ride, I ponder the magic of this date. 1741 was an exciting time for ballet. The art form was evolving and finding new directions – just like me! In my own humble way, I’m trying to make ballet more inclusive and inspire people to embrace the power and beauty of a good pirouette (even if it's in a pink tutu, naturally!).
We arrive at the grand Palais Royal in Paris. I breathe in the bustling atmosphere of this vibrant city, which was the beating heart of the arts at this time.
Marie Sallé, in all her glory, is dancing a dramatic scene from a ballet entitled "Les Fêtes de Thalie" – I'm entranced!
Marie’s dance, unlike anything seen before, breaks away from the tradition of heavy, elaborate costumes. Instead, she's wearing a simple white tunic and sandals, highlighting her graceful movements. Her dancing, too, is groundbreaking – light, elegant, and utterly captivating. She's not afraid to experiment with dramatic storytelling within the dance, weaving emotions into each move.
Watching her, I am overwhelmed by a profound connection – I know this is my dance destiny. The drive to make a difference in the world of ballet! Marie is my role model; she challenged the norm, and it was this courage that changed the face of ballet forever.
Suddenly, a commotion pulls me from my reverie. I'm not alone here – the great Jean-Georges Noverre, a revolutionary choreographer, is watching with rapt attention! He too, is mesmerised by Marie's unique artistry. What an inspiring moment – two minds, united by a passion for dance. Their revolutionary ideas will redefine ballet, creating a path for new artistry and new ways to express ourselves through movement.
For a moment, I stand frozen, my mind abuzz with admiration for these talented pioneers. And then, I take out my notebook. I know I must record this precious experience. I'll jot down Marie's elegant grace and her inspiring approach to storytelling, her brave choices. I’ll also capture Noverre’s vision of expressive ballet.
As I scribble notes, I catch the eye of the lovely Marie herself. I give her a big pink-tutu smile, to which she responds with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. We exchange a look, two sisters united across centuries by the magic of ballet!
As my time with Marie Sallé comes to a close, I climb onto Magic Meg and wave goodbye to Paris, but not before adding some incredible historical pieces to my rucksack – a programme of "Les Fêtes de Thalie", and a tiny silk flower once worn by the great dancer.
With a last whisper to Magic Meg, we depart. As I journey back through time, I’m overwhelmed with joy, brimming with a fresh sense of inspiration. The 18th century is a dazzling tapestry of artistic revolutions, of pioneering visionaries who dared to imagine something different.
And just as Marie Sallé changed the course of dance history, I vow to continue spreading the message of ballet, wearing my signature pink tutu and promoting my blog, www.pink-tutu.com! I know this journey will fuel my desire to break barriers and encourage everyone to experience the power of dance – whether they’re seasoned professionals, ballet-curious beginners or simply lovers of everything beautiful!
Now, who’s ready for a little dance practice? The world is waiting, my darlings! Remember: everyone looks amazing in a pink tutu.
Until next month!
Your dancing and time-travelling friend,
Emma
