Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things pink and pirouette-worthy. This month, for post number 980, I'm whisking us back to 8th August 1742, a date forever etched in ballet history (and in my fashionably-pink memory). But, before we dive into the delightful drama, let me introduce you to my lovely companion - Magic Meg!
Now, Magic Meg isn't just any steed, darling. She's a dazzling pink Shire with a shimmery coat, hooves that could put Cinderella's shoes to shame (they're a dazzling gold!), and a mane and tail the colour of freshly-fallen snow. You can bet we turn heads wherever we gallop, and I think that's the very best kind of attention, don't you?
Anyway, this month we’re heading back to Paris, which in 1742, was a dazzling hotbed of creativity, especially for ballet. Think sumptuous ball gowns, extravagant court balls, and even more extravagant theatrical productions! In fact, the theatre in 18th century France was positively overflowing with ballets! It was a truly exhilarating period and the most stylish era for the arts, my dears.
Now, let me paint a scene for you. As we canter into Paris, we see the opulence of the grand Palais Garnier, which while not yet built, was certainly on the minds of ballet fans and aficionados alike! Oh, how I wish I could have seen the French dance troupe strut their stuff across its hallowed stage.
I'm sure you're eager to know about the specific events taking place on that date. Well, prepare to be enchanted, darling, because 8th August 1742 marks a significant point in the life of one of ballet's biggest stars - Marie Sallé! This captivating dancer, a whirlwind of grace and technical brilliance, was pushing boundaries and, much like me, making her mark on the ballet world. She dared to challenge the extravagant court ballet and brought the focus back to pure movement and dramatic storytelling. Think elegant poses, captivating expressions, and a real sense of personal expression. It was as if she was weaving magic with every step!
Now, the truth is that Marie Salle was, unfortunately, not a massive fan of pink (shocking, I know!), but, we’ll focus on what we can! In those days, dancers, much like ballerinas today, wore lavish, hand-stitched costumes – imagine intricate embroidery and layers upon layers of tulle. I'd like to think she would have adored a dash of pink in her costumes! After all, a little bit of pink never hurts anyone, right?
In this 18th century world, ballets were designed around mythology, history, and even literature! Some of the hottest productions on the scene at this time featured classics like "The Dance of the Muses" and "The Judgment of Paris". These plays incorporated stunning sets and elegant dance scenes, just like a dream come true.
The 18th Century also saw a new form of dance, called Ballet d'action, becoming popular, featuring strong, storytelling through movement! Think powerful narratives brought to life on stage, using choreography as the language to evoke emotions and express stories.
Imagine, dear reader, the excitement bubbling around these spectacular performances! Think glittering lights, beautiful music, and captivated audiences! And all of it centred on the expressive art of dance! It truly makes my pink heart beat a little faster!
Now, as I always do, I have some fantastic finds for my ballet backpack! For this trip, it’s overflowing with beautiful treasures. From tiny pieces of tulle found in an old costume shop to an original, well-worn ballet slipper!
Back to Magic Meg, my dear! It's time for our trip home. As I say goodbye to the vibrant Paris of 1742, I can't help but dream of dancing with Marie Salle herself! A bit of a cheeky "What if..." moment! Just think of how fun it would be to travel with the leading ballerina of the time! We’d dance the night away, share fashion tips, and, most importantly, find a pink tutu for her to wear!
I have so many dreams, and I truly hope you are following my every adventure. And remember, you don't need to be in 18th century Paris to enjoy the wonders of dance! It's waiting for you in your local dance school, in your favourite musical, or even just in the comfort of your living room. So, why not get a little pink, try some pirouettes, and discover the joy of dance?
Till next time darlings, keep it pink and twirl on!
Much love,
Emma xoxo
