Welcome back, dear readers, to my little corner of the internet! Itâs Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time traveller, and it's time for another exciting journey through the history of ballet! This month, I'm taking you back to 11th November, 1746. Strap yourselves in, dear ones, because weâre about to embark on a ballet-filled adventure!
Before I tell you all about my latest exploits, I've just got to tell you about my fabulous new pair of pointe shoes! I found them at the most charming little boutique in, shall we say, a time before your time. They are the most delicate shade of rose-pink, with a satin ribbon to match, and they fit my little feet like a dream. I'm so excited to twirl in them, and they will be making their first appearance in tonight's performance at the local theatre - all for charity, of course, as we all know how much I love to give back to the community.
Anyway, back to 11th November, 1746. Magic Meg, my darling pink sparkling shire horse, galloped me through the English countryside towards London. Oh, how I love the sights and smells of old London! The cobbles, the horse-drawn carriages, the aroma of street food. This was the year that King George II made London a haven for ballet with his approval of the Royal Opera House. We wouldn't have the wonders of ballet like Giselle or La Bayadère if it werenât for him, donât you think?
I made a beeline for the Royal Opera House - just imagine, being in the same theatre as those grand ballets, and seeing all the original productions - just wow! This year the London stage saw the birth of an entirely new form of ballet, âLâEcole des Femmesâ, written and danced by Jean-Georges Noverre, whoâs considered a pioneer in modern ballet. How utterly exciting! I always try to make time for these important, historical events - it truly does paint such a beautiful picture of the evolution of ballet.
It wouldn't be a trip to London without some shopping, so off I went to the grandest of the grand emporiums to find some gorgeous fabrics for a new pink tutu, as, you know, it is an essential! I was especially smitten by the rich pink satins that the silk weavers were creating, I found one in a rose-petal shade with a shimmering silver thread - my latest obsession! My new tutu will be just perfect for a grand debut at the upcoming ballet season!
And now, for a snippet from my diary:
âDearest diary,
Today, I witnessed the magic of theatre like never before. As the curtain went up at the Royal Opera House, the whole world seemed to melt away. The graceful dancers glided across the stage, their tutus swirling around them in a symphony of colour. I couldn't help but feel my own spirit soaring with theirs. I know I say this often, but this was truly the most beautiful spectacle I have ever seen. The feeling, the emotion, the beauty of their art brought tears to my eyes, and as I tucked the details of this wonderful evening into my rucksack to take back to my own time, I knew that I will always treasure these experiences.â
I really have to say, there's a particular charm to ballet history that draws me in - each era feels so unique, and each moment, filled with beautiful tales of graceful movements and elegant tutus. Iâm sure I donât need to tell you dear readers that every time I go back in time I feel as if Iâve walked right into a magical dream - but with even more dazzling pink!
Donât forget, I have an important job to do - spreading the message of the joy of ballet and persuading you all to grab a pink tutu, give it a twirl and embrace your inner ballerina!
And remember, darling readers, âWhere there is beauty, there is ballet.â
Until next month, Emma xx
