Post #1055: A Twirl Through Time! November 11th, 1748! 🩰✨💖

Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your portal to all things ballet and time travel! This month, I'm whisking you back to November 11th, 1748, for a delightful peek into the world of ballet from centuries ago! As always, I'm travelling in style, of course, with my darling Meg – my pink-sparkling Shire horse with the most magnificent golden hooves and a flowing mane and tail of purest white – carrying my trusty leather rucksack, ready to collect ballet treasures and tales.

Now, as a devoted ballerina and fashion enthusiast, my favourite aspect of time travel is exploring the ballet fashions of the past. You see, my ultimate dream is to have every single person, everywhere in the world, wearing a pink tutu! (Don't worry, I'm already planning a huge Tutu Campaign, more on that in a future post!)

But back to 1748… This year was bursting with ballet delights! You might think, “1748, that's so long ago! Was there even ballet then?” Well, let me assure you, darling, the ballet world was already buzzing with activity. Across the globe, theatres and courts were abuzz with exquisite ballet productions, and the art form was already developing and evolving.

My journey this month began in Paris, the capital of chic! Imagine the glittering chandeliers, the velvet curtains, the buzz of excitement! I was whisked straight to the Théâtre de l’Opéra to see the most exquisite production – the premiere of “Ariadne in Naxos", by the brilliant Jean-Philippe Rameau. Now, this ballet was truly ahead of its time, fusing beautiful music and storytelling with spectacular dance choreography.

Just picture it: shimmering costumes, elegant steps, and stories of love, myth, and drama. It was mesmerising, darling!

But the real treat came after the performance, when I got to see some of the exquisite costumes from the show – beautifully intricate fabrics in muted shades of green and blues, adorned with luxurious embroideries. Imagine the detail, the effort that went into creating these works of art!

Of course, my rucksack is already bulging with fascinating fabrics and sketches. These are going to be perfect inspiration for my next pink-tutu design, don’t you think?

As I continued my journey through time, I galloped on Meg towards the Italian city of Venice. Venice was another epicentre of ballet in the 18th century! Here, I was welcomed at the Teatro San Cassiano, one of the very first public opera houses in the world. The history here is so rich! This grand theatre had premiered operas and ballets since the mid-17th century!

While it might not have been the peak of the Venetian ballet era – those dazzling, acrobatic steps would come later! - it was fascinating to see how the world of dance had taken shape in this elegant city.

The final stop on this time-travel journey took me to London, where I strolled past the iconic Drury Lane Theatre, a hub of both theatre and dance for centuries. While the stage was a spectacle in itself, it was the vibrant atmosphere, the laughter, and the anticipation of theatre-goers that truly captured my heart!

Of course, no journey through ballet history is complete without mentioning Jean-George Noverre, the innovative dance maestro! Though his "Lettres sur la Danse" (Letters on Dancing) were written decades later in the 1760s, it was the era of 1748 that gave birth to his revolutionary ideas, emphasizing natural movement and expressive choreography, laying the foundation for what would become modern ballet as we know it!

While I wish I had more time to spend in each location, alas, I have to return to my own time. But rest assured, darling, this is only the beginning. There’s so much more to discover about ballet history, so much more pink to explore.

Don’t forget to join me next month for another magical journey into ballet's vibrant past. I can't wait to share with you all the thrilling stories and beautiful moments that await us in the next era!

Remember, darling, never be afraid to twirl, to dream, and to explore the magical world of ballet! Until next time, be sure to keep your pink tutu handy, because you never know where time travel might take you!

💖🩰✨ Yours always,
Emma.
