Hello lovelies, and welcome to another exciting entry in my ballet time travel blog, Pink Tutu Travels! It's the beginning of March, and I'm feeling absolutely brimming with inspiration - all thanks to a fantastic journey I took back to 1749. This month's adventures saw me soaring through time, riding on the back of my shimmering steed, Magic Meg. (Remember, she's a beautiful pink shire horse, with golden hooves and a snow-white mane and tail, the very picture of fairy-tale magic!)
The Romance Of 1749
Landing in 1749 felt like stepping into a beautiful, intricate, historical painting. Imagine: cobbled streets bustling with horse-drawn carriages, elegantly dressed gentlemen in powdered wigs, and ladies in extravagant gowns adorned with silk, lace, and feathers. I, of course, sported my own touch of sparkle, twirling down the street in my pink tulle tutu, feeling every bit the ballet-dancing star of this delightful era!
Ballet in The Age of Enlightenment
But my mission wasn't just to admire the charming architecture and delightful costumes; I was here for the ballet! You see, the 18th century was a time of tremendous change and upheaval in the ballet world, but also an age of immense creativity and innovation. This was the period of "Ballet d’action", which took ballet beyond its purely dance-focused nature, and fused it with drama and elaborate plots.
A Glimpse Into The World of Ballet
It was so exciting to be a part of the theatrical and dance world of the time. I even stumbled upon a charming play called "The Shepherd’s Opera," which blended music, dialogue, and dancing, creating a wonderful tapestry of entertainment! (The ladies even sported gorgeous knee-length ballet shoes, which I secretly added to my rucksack collection, hehe!).
From Royal Theatres to Public Places
During my 1749 visit, ballet wasn't confined to just the royal theatres, though. It had also begun to appear in the salons of wealthy individuals and public places. Imagine, a ballet performance happening in a Parisian salon! Imagine all those extravagant hairstyles and outfits. sighs dreamily
Dancing With The Stars
But back to our ballet history. Some of the big names in ballet of 1749 were Auguste Vestris (an absolute legend!), and the charming Marie Camargo. Her dancing revolutionised technique by being lighter, faster, and using a more playful and whimsical style, breaking away from the stiff, slow-paced conventions of the time. Imagine a world where ballerina's costumes were more relaxed and beautiful! chuckles, happy sighs
Fashion Trends: Embracing The Pink
Of course, my time-travel explorations wouldn't be complete without a glimpse of the fashionable trends of 1749! The ladies wore panniers and corsets that gave their dresses beautiful and dramatic shapes. Think layers of silks, satins, and lace, adorned with intricate ribbons, bows, and ruffles. But most importantly, they embraced colour! And who loves colour more than a tutu-loving gal like me?!
Tutu Fashion - Making Pink The New Black
My quest, as always, is to spread the beauty of the tutu across every timeline. 1749 was no exception! After all, a good tutu knows no boundaries in time and fashion. My little pink tutu sparked curious glances from all around. Many commented on its elegance and "air of fashion." I even saw a few young ladies attempt a pirouette or two in their skirts, inspired by my own graceful movements! They're catching on! ;)
Pink Tutu Travel Journal Entries
This visit was a treasure trove of inspiration and learning. I managed to get some fabulous entries in my journal: * A detailed sketch of an adorable tiny ballerina shoe with a ribbon to tie around the ankle (which is totally going in my shoe collection!) * Notes on the intriguing 'Ballet d’action' genre that combined dance, drama, and music! (I'll be revisiting that to get inspiration for my next tutu creation). * An account of a truly fantastic ball in the heart of Paris where a dance troupe performed a stunningly vibrant waltz! I captured it all in my travel journal! I'll have to practice that waltz later and put my skills to good use for a grand dance performance for you lovely people!
