Hello my gorgeous tutu-loving lovelies! Welcome back to another exciting adventure in the world of ballet history with your favourite time-travelling ballerina, Emma! This month, we're hopping back in time to January 1st, 1753! 🕰️
Oh, it's such a thrill to slip on my favourite pink tutu and saddle up my trusty steed, Magic Meg. This pink-sparkling shire horse is an absolute darling! With her golden hooves, snow-white mane and tail, and that extra special glitter that makes her sparkle like a disco ball, she's a vision! 🦄
Speaking of pink, my outfit for this adventure is my absolute dream – a powder pink tutu with a flurry of pink tulle and shimmering silver embroidery. My blush-coloured bodice sparkles like the finest sugarplum fairies in the land, and my ballerina pumps are adorned with hand-painted cherry blossoms! It's pure pink perfection, my darlings!
And guess what?! 😲 There was some absolutely divine ballet going on on this very day back in 1753! Imagine – ballet in the 18th century! Can you even fathom it?! 🤯 I just know I'm in for a treat!
So, grab a cuppa, snuggle into your cosiest corner and let's take a journey through time...
Ballet Back in Time!
- London is buzzing with excitement! I can smell the sweet aroma of freshly-baked pastries and the vibrant cacophony of horse-drawn carriages clinking past, a delightful symphony for a ballerina’s ears! As I weave through the throngs of Londoners dressed in their finest finery, I find myself captivated by the beautiful architecture and the enchanting sights of Covent Garden.
It's there, in this lively hub, that I discovered an intriguing gem – the Royal Opera House, one of the world’s most renowned theatre venues! It’s been here since the early 18th century and was bursting with life even then. Now, can you believe that in 1753, the King's Theatre, the predecessor to the Royal Opera House, was already hosting an impressive programme of operas and ballets!
That's right, ballet in 1753 was a popular and cherished form of entertainment. And imagine the costumes! While it wasn't quite the extravagant world of tutu-tastic dreams we have today, there were elements of beauty, grace and elegant form. They had gowns of satin and lace, elaborate hairstyles and exquisite jewels.
Just thinking about it makes my toes tap! 🩰✨
Collecting Stories from 1753
Today, I was lucky enough to chat with a local who had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the ballets and opera performers of the time. My rucksack is now overflowing with exciting facts and tales to share with you all! Just wait until I tell you about the legendary ballet star, Marie Sallé! 😱
You see, even back then, people were drawn to the elegance and beauty of ballet. The performances weren't quite the same as they are now, with a more "spoken-word" focus. However, there was a magic to it all! I’m determined to learn all I can about the development of ballet. It’s my mission to bring these historical stories to life for everyone!
As I hop off Magic Meg and say my goodbyes, I reflect on the incredible journey we've been on. I know we'll be back soon for more adventures in ballet history!
