Hello darlings! Emma here, and welcome to my little corner of the internet where all things ballet twirl, sparkle, and shimmer! This month, my dear Meg (she's a majestic pink shire with a heart of gold β literally, her hooves are pure gold!) and I took a little trip back to 1775, on the 3rd of March to be precise. It was absolutely magical! As you know, I'm all about celebrating the history of ballet, so naturally, my trusty pink tutu was packed for this escapade. You see, you never know what you might need to dazzle when you're whizzing through the centuries. π
Now, 1775 β a time of great political upheaval, change, and revolutions β and just as the world was brewing with change, ballet was, too. It's mind-blowing how even during times of strife and societal upheaval, dance managed to find a way to express itself, entertain, and evoke emotions. Can you believe that during this time, the very idea of ballerinas actually dancing on their toes, en pointe, was starting to become a reality? I imagine the audience gasping in astonishment, mesmerized by the sheer athleticism and grace! I've been practicing my relevΓ© for just this reason. It's no wonder ballet continues to captivate audiences for centuries. It's the embodiment of pure art, a symphony of movement and emotions, and absolutely magical!
What's on the 1775 ballet scene, you ask? Well, I wouldn't say the pointe technique had really taken off back then (though rumours were swirling amongst the dancers!). It's more about strong technique, grace, and elegance β definitely some fabulous costumes with panniers and petticoats β picture ruffles galore, lace and luxurious fabrics, oh so dreamy! This is an era that absolutely oozes elegance and, as for my rucksack? I found the most beautiful hand-painted miniature dancing slippers and a gorgeous pair of lace-trimmed ballet shoes! Just imagine β they probably haven't worn these in nearly 300 years! π©°π
It was an honour to wander the streets of London and Paris and get a sense of what it must have been like to witness ballet during that era. To think β in these grand theaters with the chandeliers twinkling, the plush red velvet seats, and the gentle murmuring of the crowd β that was the very beginning of a passion that still burns brightly today. My goodness, I think it's truly inspiring how much our passion for ballet has persisted, passed from generation to generation. It's in our DNA now! It makes you realize that despite all the years and all the changes, what truly matters is the love for dance.
I was lucky enough to catch a performance at the OpΓ©ra Garnier in Paris! Oh, what a truly magnificent spectacle! I imagine this era to be a perfect time for opulent ballet balls too! There's an air of sophisticated elegance with elegant, detailed attire and an abundance of silk, velvet, and even a hint of brocade if you're feeling extra luxurious! Imagine twirling across the ballroom with a graceful waltz, surrounded by beautiful ball gowns and impeccable fashion! Just like today! I'm already making plans for a pink ball gown of my own to wear to the next ballet event! π
Of course, my adventure didn't stop there! I hopped on Meg, feeling the wind whisk through my pink tutu and galloped on towards Derbyshire β that's where I'm from! My very own dance school there still keeps that tradition of graceful and elegant movement and stunning costumes alive, teaching young girls how to truly move like princesses, graceful and poise, just like the ballerinas of this era. It warms my heart knowing that this magic lives on, that generations continue to be inspired by the beauty of dance, even back then!
Speaking of inspiration β darling, have you ever thought about twirling in a pink tutu? Yes, I know what you're thinking! 'Pink is so clichΓ©!'. Well, I beg to differ! It's vibrant, it's playful, and most of all, it radiates happiness! Just like ballet itself! Don't be shy; let your inner ballerina bloom! Maybe try a ballet class β they're incredibly fun! The teachers are lovely, the music's amazing, and everyone's so welcoming. Who knows, you might even find yourself dreaming of magical horses and waltzing through historical dance halls. Oh, the joy! π€©
I'll leave you with a little dose of inspiration β the ballerina on my dance bag is rocking a bright pink tutu! π So there you have it, my dears β ballet's never looked so pink. Now, get out there and embrace the magic! π©°β¨
See you next month for more adventures in pink!
Yours in twirls,
Emma
