Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina. February's here, and I'm feeling utterly fluttery with excitement. This month, we're going back in time to February 2nd, 1777, for a rather remarkable dance with history!
It's so exhilarating to hop onto Magic Meg and let her sparkly, golden-hooved spirit carry us through the ages. This time, we're heading to the heart of the Enlightenment, a time of intellectual curiosity and artistic flourish. Oh, and did I mention powdered wigs and breeches?!
Before I tell you about my adventures, let's rewind a bit. The 1700s were a period of profound change for ballet, my darling. You see, the ballet d'action (ballet with a plot) was born! I simply adore the theatrical beauty of telling stories through dance, and you just can't deny that this era brought forth incredible creativity in ballet staging. Imagine a world where the ballerinas didn't just dance, they acted out a whole story right before your very eyes! Simply delightful!
But where to begin in 1777? It's a question of how long my blog can be, my dears! This year saw the birth of a real gem in the ballet world: "L’Amour vainqueur", a grand ballet with a romantic story written by the beloved Jean-Georges Noverre. It’s all about love triumphing over jealousy and intrigue - truly a masterpiece for the age!
Noverre was a true revolutionary, challenging the traditional ballets of his time and emphasizing a natural and expressive style of dance. I do believe his work was so inspiring for future choreographers! He was a trailblazer, embracing emotions and the telling of stories through the dancers.
Now, darling, where are we to go to find this extraordinary "L’Amour vainqueur"?. I hear that it is currently gracing the Parisian stages at the Théâtre de la Comédie-Italienne! It's an absolute dream to be able to visit Paris during this era. Imagine the cafes, the fashion, the incredible music! But perhaps the highlight of this trip is the sheer luxury of attending a performance by some of the finest dancers in the world! Imagine those graceful ballerinas, with their powdered wigs and elegant, flowing dresses, performing in all their glory! They’d make a perfect inspiration for the modern ballet dancers we see today, I think!
However, Paris wasn't the only place buzzing with ballet magic on February 2nd, 1777. Oh, if we only had time to pop to London and see Love in the Clouds, by James Sanderson, a two-act, highly acclaimed ballet performance at Covent Garden! Imagine the glamour, darling, the twinkling lights, and the music drifting through the air as I savour each movement of the ballet dancers, marvel at their costumes, and fall deeper and deeper into the world of ballet!
As you know, I have my lovely leather rucksack for gathering the stories of these dance troupes, collecting snippets of their life from the streets. They tell me so much about their traditions, their clothing, and how they see the world. I've found some fantastic things in my travels; you just have to believe that history is an exciting adventure, and a world waiting to be discovered.
The ballet world, even back then, wasn't confined to Paris or London, darlings! This was a time of tremendous growth and influence, a period where dance took center stage in European culture. I have heard stories from our dear Magic Meg, of beautiful dances occurring throughout Germany and Austria. I've seen dancers swirling in their silk, light and free as birds, telling stories without a single word. You know how much I adore sharing my adventures, my darling! This is just a taste of the wonders that 1777 holds! It’s not all frills and tutus, I assure you. You will discover a depth, a passionate dedication to artistry and craftsmanship that is just as vibrant today. I have some fantastic tutu inspiration for the modern-day dancer! And just think, I even saw a young dancer at the Ballet School of La Scala, making his first steps in dance! His movements were so smooth and beautiful - I almost choked on my lavender tea. The ballet world has always been home to such incredible young talents! Oh, how exciting it was to see him begin his journey!
But even amidst the dance and the glitter, there were struggles, of course. Women often found themselves held back, unable to truly reach the heights of their artistic potential. Yet, even amidst the challenges, the strength and passion of the dancers shone through. Just think of it, dears. The women I've met this time around are the women who built our history! They inspired our costumes and movements, our styles, and even our vocabulary, because let's be honest, you can’t escape the French influence, can you? Their determination is the stuff of legends, and their talents and creativity simply unparalleled. We should celebrate their spirit!
On my next journey, I intend to delve deeper into this rich history, uncovering the fascinating stories behind those graceful leaps and pirouettes. It's time to go beyond the fancy footwork and the extravagant costumes to the women who brought life and passion to these grand dances. You see, they deserve our recognition.
However, darling, for now, I’m going to indulge in a slice of delicious vanilla cake, topped with a shimmering pink buttercream, inspired by the beautiful pink flowers I spotted at a charming bakery on my trip. This month has truly been an extraordinary experience, reminding us that the history of ballet is an endless well of inspiration, of creativity, of stories that move the heart and capture the imagination. Don't forget, darlings, there is always a tutu for everyone, in every era, in every shape, every style!
Until next time, keep your heads high, keep your hearts open, and embrace the joy of dance!
Love always,
Emma xx
