Hello my darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu! It's a cold December day here in Derbyshire, but my heart is warm with the memory of my latest time travel adventure. This month, my trusty steed Magic Meg whisked me back to the 12th of December, 1780, a time when powdered wigs were all the rage, and ladies wore hoop skirts so big, you'd think they were waltzing in a giant bell!
Oh, to be back in those grand times! My pink tutu (you just can't get enough of them, can you?) felt positively daring against the silks and satins of the 18th century. I’m already envisioning the pink tutu taking off amongst the court ladies - just imagine a little pink polka dot tutu peeking from beneath a billowing silk gown, wouldn't that be divine?
Now, you might be wondering, what was happening in the world of ballet on this particular December 12th? Well, let's just say the Parisian stages were absolutely alight! The Opera-Comique, with its charming melodies and lighter storytelling, was holding court, and over at the Académie Royale de Musique, they were presenting some spectacular dramatic ballets. Back then, a ballet wasn't just dancing - it was a full-fledged theatrical spectacle, with extravagant costumes, elaborate scenery, and plenty of pantomime. Imagine!
Speaking of extravagant costumes, the fashions of the time were absolutely dazzling. Think feathered hats, shimmering brocades, and lace that could rival a spider's web, all in the most luscious shades of pink, emerald, and sapphire. I must confess, I couldn't resist a little window-shopping. And imagine my joy when I found the most beautiful pearl and rose quartz necklace tucked away in an old jewelery box! It now resides proudly in my collection, a perfect reminder of the elegance and artistry of those bygone days.
Speaking of artistry, my journey took me right to the doorstep of one of the most fascinating historical figures – Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France! It was such a thrilling encounter! The Queen was in a joyous mood that day, she was planning a royal gala for her court at Versailles! This was such a thrilling event, a grand gathering, with elaborate dances and magnificent costumes, of course!
You wouldn’t believe the stories I collected! From snippets of gossip whispered among courtiers to the dramatic secrets hidden beneath powdered wigs, the atmosphere crackled with excitement, anticipation, and whispered scandals! It felt like a whirlwind of passion and intrigue, and all within a few elegant steps from where Marie Antoinette herself had danced.
Let me tell you, dancing in those days was much more about drama and flair. No delicate pointe shoes for these ladies - they pirouetted on their toes in satin slippers or graceful slippers, adding a unique flavour to every movement.
The choreography was grand and dramatic, much different from our more nuanced and graceful movements of today. Imagine graceful jumps, swirling pirouettes, and the theatricality of graceful extensions and slow-paced grand movements, with every gesture speaking volumes. It’s easy to see how these theatrical ballet traditions paved the way for the modern ballets we know and love.
Now, don't think I just indulged in luxurious experiences! My leather rucksack was crammed with ballet ephemera: I discovered a collection of exquisitely-crafted ballet slippers - I even unearthed a few tucked away in a secret cabinet in Marie Antoinette’s own personal theatre. And did I mention that my magic satchel now contains a miniature opera house model? Talk about a true collector’s find! It’s so delicate, with tiny windows to see the little performers going about their preparations before a show. I imagine myself as a tiny dancer flitting across its tiny stage.
Speaking of performances, let's take a look at what's happening in the ballet world today. There are countless incredible events happening in theatres and streets across the world. Just this week, the London Ballet company presented a magnificent rendition of ‘The Nutcracker’, its sparkling sets and gorgeous costumes bringing the tale to life. And on the other side of the Atlantic, New York City Ballet was enthralling audiences with their beautiful presentation of ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ I simply can't resist the joy and wonder of a ballet performance! It always makes me feel light and alive, like a beautiful pink tutu twirling through the air!
Before I go, my darlings, remember the power of a pink tutu! Let its whimsy and grace guide you.
Until next month, may your steps be light, your smiles wide, and your hearts filled with the wonder of ballet.
Always,
Emma
