Hello my lovely tutu-tastic readers! Emma here, your resident time-traveling ballerina, back with another month's dose of ballet history and, of course, pink!
This month I've whisked myself back to January 1st, 1782, and oh my goodness, what a fascinating world!
The frost sparkles across the fields as I settle Magic Meg in the stable of a charming little inn. You wouldn't believe the wonderful vintage fabrics I managed to pick up in a bustling Parisian market! Imagine my joy - silk, velvet, even some exquisite lace, all destined to inspire future tutu designs! I couldn't resist a few frothy pink frills to add to my own collection, too!
But first, a little bit of context for you! The year 1782 marked a turning point in European history, as the American colonies declared independence from Britain. On this day, the world's eyes were also drawn to the vibrant, exciting dance scene.
In Vienna, a certain Joseph Haydn was writing music for the imperial court, while the Spanish capital Madrid was home to some of the most captivating choreographic artistry of the age. The very first ballet in Prague, Bohemia, was actually premiered just four years prior. Imagine - the seeds of a vibrant dance culture were being planted all over the world!
While the fashion in the era was definitely not all about pink tutus, my heart skips a beat when I think of those lovely, frothy panniers and powdered wigs. Honestly, it just makes me long for a fashion show with my modern twist!
As I take my customary time travel "morning walk," I find myself right in the midst of the French countryside, where ballet troupes were on the move, traveling by horse and carriage, taking their passion for dance to different corners of the country. Their performances must have been a truly magical spectacle! The romantic, choreographed steps, the swirling costumes and music... It brings a little tear to my eye!
I'm collecting all kinds of intriguing snippets for the next Pink-Tutu-Inspired Performance – the stories, the music, even some costume sketches – everything!
And of course, I'm never far from the hunt for the perfect pink accessory. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a tiny shop selling exquisite porcelain dolls. Each one had the sweetest little pink slippers! I managed to snag a few to add to my collection of treasured ballerina memorabilia! They’re even more charming than the Parisian fabrics I bought, and they'll look perfectly pink alongside the lace and velvet!
After all, this blog, this website, it’s more than just sharing stories about dance, right? It's about bringing some joy and wonder to every day. And as long as I've got my tutu on, a beautiful horse, and a magical adventure, we'll do just that, one pink-tastic step at a time!
