Post #1494: A Whirl Through Time in a Pink Tutu - June 6th, 1785!

Hello, lovelies! Emma here, your pink tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you off on another whimsical journey through the history of ballet! This month, I'm stepping back to June 6th, 1785, a time when the world of dance was buzzing with excitement and innovation. And believe me, this journey was absolutely bursting with pink and tutus!

As always, I hopped onto the back of my trusty steed, Magic Meg (don't let her name fool you, she's a dazzling shire horse, all white mane and tail, gleaming golden hooves, and, yes, sparkling pink!) and we were off! I love seeing the world whizz past, those colourful swirling scenes from the past, and you know what? It’s made even more magical by having a beautiful pink tutu flowing in the breeze.

My destination? The stunning Palais-Royal in Paris, France, the centre of the ballet world back then! As I arrived, the streets were already brimming with ladies in lavish gowns, their laughter filling the air. Just the kind of energy I thrive on, you know?

This date, June 6th, 1785, was quite special. It was the very day that the esteemed Parisian opera, the Opéra de Paris, opened its doors. Can you imagine, darling? The grandeur of the building, the hush of anticipation before the first notes, the thrill of the unknown – just like the magic of a brand new tutu!

The opening performance was something out of a dream: “Psyché” a beautiful ballet-opera that featured an exquisite score by the celebrated composer Christoph Willibald Gluck.

You see, during this period, ballet was transitioning. It wasn’t just about elaborate steps anymore. It was about storytelling, about passion, about using the body as a canvas for emotional expression.

While I was watching “Psyché”, I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the exquisite ballet costumes of the time – you wouldn’t believe how extravagant they were! I’m talking layers upon layers of silk and lace, delicate floral motifs, vibrant hues (including my beloved pink, of course!), and, wait for it – tutus. Yes, the early iterations of this iconic ballet garment were making their grand appearance.

Although not as frothy and romantic as the ones we know today, these 18th-century tutus were more functional – helping to accentuate the movements of the dancers. Of course, I snagged a few samples for my ballet rucksack (because you can never have enough fabric memories!), and believe me, darling, these little treasures are destined for a very special pink tutu display back in my Derbyshire studio.

Speaking of which, my ballet-filled life is always busy! My little boutique shop in the Peak District is booming! All my little tutu and ballet-themed items are flying off the shelves. Oh, and by the way, I just designed my first collection of pink tutus for ladies of all shapes and sizes! We all deserve to embrace the pink tutu power!

Later in the day, I took a stroll through the Parisien boulevards, observing the fascinating Parisian fashion. Everything from the way they styled their hair with ornate headbands to their stunning fans adorned with lace and embroidery – it's a ballet dancer's paradise! The atmosphere was abuzz, full of life, and of course, I felt right at home, particularly because they loved fashion, they loved drama, and they adored seeing all sorts of ballet and dance performances. And that's precisely why they say Parisian ballet was on the cutting edge, a place where the impossible suddenly became reality, a magical wonderland that set the stage for the grand ballet traditions we adore today.

But darling, my story doesn’t stop there. It just got even more magical. As twilight descended, I headed to the Palais Garnier – that stunningly opulent Parisian opera house where I could see, through time, the upcoming construction. Yes, it was going to be built only a little while in the future! Just another piece of magical history on our little adventure today.

Just like the captivating world of ballet, each journey back in time holds new secrets and wonder. So, until next time, stay sparkly, embrace your inner pink tutu diva, and don’t forget to always follow your dreams - on stage, on the dance floor, and across time!

Oh, and be sure to check out my next ballet time-travelling adventure, which I’ll be posting on the first of next month on the www.pink-tutu.com blog! You'll never want to miss an update, darling. You won’t believe what happens next! Love you all, and keep dancing!
