Hello, darling ballet bunnies!
Welcome back to my little corner of the internet where we journey through the glittering, twirling world of ballet history, all wrapped up in a big, pink bow. I’m Emma, your resident tutu-loving time traveller, and I'm so thrilled you've joined me on another adventure!
This month, I've had the utter joy of finding myself transported right back to August 8th, 1785. Can you imagine?! The air was thick with the scent of lavender and freshly cut grass, and the sun was shimmering down on a vibrant London, buzzing with excitement. But it wasn’t just the atmosphere that was dazzling; the world of ballet was also absolutely blooming!
Today’s journey started with a spirited ride on my fabulous steed, Magic Meg – our journey to the past, as always, a breathtaking adventure. You'd be amazed by this beauty; she's a shire horse, absolutely majestic, with a mane and tail as white as a fresh snowfall, golden hooves that shimmer like sunrise, and of course, her own pink sparkling saddle. She knows exactly where she’s going, as though the fabric of time itself reveals itself to her.
Today, I'm writing from my new digs – a charming little tea shop just a stone’s throw from London’s Covent Garden. It’s absolutely charming, with dainty tables covered in crisp white linen and an array of delicate teacups overflowing with fragrant chamomile tea.
But, darling, you’ve heard enough about tea! Let’s talk about the true stars of this historical outing - ballet, naturally! It seems that August 8th, 1785, was a momentous day in the world of ballet. While there were no scheduled performances, the rumour mill was in overdrive.
It was a whispery, intriguing conversation with a pair of gentlemen in powdered wigs who told me that Marie Allard, the celebrated ballerina, was busy in rehearsals. Imagine - that name is legend in ballet circles! She’s considered one of the most daring dancers of her time, a trailblazer who redefined ballet movements. She even debuted the "attitude" pose that continues to be a classic move today, you know the one, with the pointed toe and arched back - a real stunner!
Talking of legendary ballerinas, imagine my delight when I found myself in the very same shop that Marie herself was known to visit! Apparently, she adored dainty French silks and delicate ribbons for her elaborate hair decorations, so I was in seventh heaven! Imagine, me, in her same spot, perhaps even admiring the same ribbons!
And while I didn't get to see her dance this time, let me tell you - that only fuels my passion for coming back to this period. I simply must witness her elegance firsthand, and feel the electricity in the air as her steps soar across the stage!
Here's what’s hot in the ballet world this month in 1785:
- All things Marie! You couldn't walk a street without hearing someone mention her. Her popularity was practically meteoric! Her style was the style everyone yearned for - elegance, grace, and the occasional sassy kick! I can just imagine myself waltzing in the spotlight, all graceful lines and daring attitude - oh, darling, just imagine!
- Parisian fashion is taking over! Ballet costume trends are evolving, becoming lighter and more flowing, taking inspiration from French fashion trends. You might think I’m being dramatic, but those big poofy skirts from a couple of decades ago, well, they’re definitely out of fashion! Think delicate floral patterns, elegant silk, and that divine colour - pink, of course.
- Ballerinas, you're more than just pretty faces! It seems that in the past few decades, there has been a shift in how ballerinas are perceived. People are starting to see the raw talent and physical power required, alongside their undeniable artistry! What I wouldn't give to be able to go back in time and watch one of those first public ballet performances - a true historic gem!
Even though my journey through this specific time period ended, my heart is brimming with inspiration, fueled by the rich ballet history I’ve witnessed today! Oh, I’m practically buzzing!
And just you wait, darling ballet bunnies! My ballet-filled wardrobe is bursting at the seams with new ideas thanks to my time in 1785, and you’ll be seeing it all unfold in my next blog post. And just for a hint, prepare yourselves for tutus more magnificent than ever before! Pink, of course!
Until next time, darlings, stay twirling!
Emma
