Hello darlings! Emma here, and I'm positively thrilled to be whisking you away on another time-travelling adventure today. This time, our pink-tutu clad journey takes us to 1787, specifically to the 2nd of February. Let's saddle up Magic Meg, our fabulous pink sparkling Shire with golden hooves and a flowing white mane, and take a gallop through the vibrant world of ballet, shall we?
A Glimpse into the Parisian Ballet Scene
We arrived at the opulent Palais Garnier, where the Parisian opera house would one day stand. Of course, we’re still a good century before its grand construction, but it’s lovely to be here on the outskirts of this energetic city. I can practically hear the Parisian patter of conversation and the clinking of glasses. It’s this city, you see, that has always been a centre for fashion and artistic inspiration, particularly ballet.
This particular evening is steeped in balletic brilliance, dear readers. I popped into the Opéra National de Paris and stumbled upon a beautiful production. There I was, captivated by the sheer athleticism of the dancers, their every movement as fluid as a flowing river. It was as if the entire stage had been infused with the very essence of Parisian style! It was a wonderful dance, elegant, expressive and with beautiful costumes. There was no single ballet being staged here at this time – I am learning, dear reader, that the 18th century had a variety of mixed dance works. These weren’t just full length ballets with a narrative as you get today. They included more ensemble dances. Even if they weren’t choreographed in the modern balletic way, you still felt the grace and athleticism. These dancers, as ever, took the art to a new height. They made me yearn for those glorious floor length skirts to swirl and pirouette in, even though a full tutu hadn't been invented yet. It would be fascinating to go to a "Ball" here in France and join the dancers in one of their courtly dances – I could imagine a delightful pink velvet fitted bodice and flowing skirt would be the perfect way to match the 18th century elegant styles.
History Through a Pink Lens: A Moment of Reflection
As we journeyed further into this era, it was easy to see the stirrings of change in the world, even though it wasn’t always easy being a woman. I took some time out for a reflection in my trusty antique pocket mirror, and let me tell you, darling, the reflection of this 18th century is captivating! I was reminded of just how fascinating, intricate and inspiring ballet really is, and how much it truly has intertwined with fashion and history. It feels, dear reader, like every ballet performance is an embodiment of a moment frozen in time, allowing us a fleeting glance into the souls of those who danced before us. It’s no surprise that I often spend hours scouring through history books to unearth little ballet nuggets of information – it’s fascinating to imagine the dancers in those periods, the clothes they wore, and the music that accompanied their moves.
Fashion for a Time Traveller
After taking in all the sartorial splendour of this time, I felt inspired to add to my treasure trove of vintage ballet finds, my rucksack now stuffed full. I stumbled upon a lovely fabric shop that sold some beautiful silks. This, I think, is definitely going to become a piece in a new creation – perhaps a bodice to be worn with my lovely vintage full length skirt. My mind is buzzing with the endless possibilities for incorporating 18th-century style with a dash of my own pink-tutu twist! My lovely readers, the beauty of ballet is that it always allows for interpretation, making it ever-evolving. Like myself, it always comes up with fresh takes on its past. I must say, even back then, the ladies in Paris really had style. The lace, the delicate floral patterns, the fabrics, the powdered hair... They just oozed class.
