Hello my lovely Tutu-lovers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here, and welcome back to my monthly wanderings through ballet history. This month, I've travelled back to the 10th of October 1791 - just imagine, that was over two hundred years ago! As I always say, history is fascinating, and there's always something new to learn, especially about the magical world of ballet!
Before we dive in, though, let's give a quick shout-out to my trusty steed, Magic Meg! This gorgeous pink-sparkling Shire with golden hooves and a flowing white mane and tail is a true fashionista, even in 1791! She really loves pink tutus and loves prancing around, showing off her elegance and style.
As usual, my pink-hued rucksack is packed and ready for all the exciting ballet treasures I'll be finding. It's incredible to think of all the fantastic things that were happening in the ballet world back in 1791 - imagine being able to peek behind the curtain of history!
Let’s Time Travel!
So, what's going on in the ballet world on this very date in history? Firstly, we need to travel to Italy!
1791 saw the debut of an utterly fabulous ballet - "La Scuola di Ballo" by Jean-Georges Noverre! It’s a piece with a beautiful blend of theatrical drama and classical dance, exploring the dynamics between teacher and pupil. Just imagine - imagine being at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, taking in this ballet spectacle - the beautiful costumes, the dramatic storylines, the exquisite grace and strength of the dancers… a feast for the senses, I can tell you!
As I watch the performance, my mind whizzes with inspiration. This ballet is such a beautiful testament to the enduring power of the ballet, to its ability to weave magic out of motion and tell timeless stories. Just thinking about it gives me such a powerful energy. The sheer grace and poise of the dancers, their elegant movements and dynamic leaps, inspire me! Oh, to be a ballet dancer for a day… or even a few hours!
Now, you’re probably thinking, “Emma, but surely you have to dance, and dress like them?!”
Well, that’s a big part of the joy of time travelling. If I don’t immerse myself in the experience, how can I get the story? So, Magic Meg, she can teleport to various locations with me (after I perform of course to help with our budget and keep things balanced) and we don’t do the same show at every place we visit, that would be boring, so it can take time, to create the experience fully.
So, yes, there are ballet classes for us, and lots of clothes to consider for this trip. For this 1791 period, we need elegance and grace, even in the most subtle of touches. Think soft silks and light fabrics, delicate pastel colours, and beautifully tailored shapes, like graceful and flowing lines of dress for Magic Meg.
I even found this fantastic tailor who custom makes pink and gold shoes for Meg! Isn't it fabulous! Imagine a little piece of fairytale magic coming alive - we are living a true Cinderella dream!
Oh, I do love the world of ballet fashion and this era really brings to life what ballet is about. All the wonderful little details…the subtle, elegant touches, the focus on beauty and graceful movement. It’s about much more than just dance - it's about self-expression and art in motion, and creating a world of joy and wonder.
You know, I actually bought a little book about fashion and clothing from the period! It was written in beautiful, elegant script. Such a perfect reminder of how things were so very different back in those days! I love how ballet influenced fashion throughout history, it's always been a driving force behind creating trends, creating art through movement.
I am Going To Make The World Pink Again!
My time here has been amazing, filled with exquisite performances and elegant gatherings. It truly fills me with such happiness - that shared joy, the delight in beautiful movements and stories spun in dance - the shared connection we feel when watching a performance! It makes me love pink tutus more than ever!
Speaking of pink tutus - what a fabulous, powerful symbol they are! They’re like a dance of life itself, swirling with movement and joy! I see a little girl in a pink tutu, just like I was once, so excited to dance, with pure joy radiating from her. I picture her dreaming of being a dancer one day - oh the power of that dream! The desire to express yourself through dance - and the little pink tutu embodies all of that magic.
It’s why I do what I do, travel through time, tell these amazing stories, and remind the world - through the beauty of my pink tutu! - that there’s so much wonder waiting to be explored in this beautiful world of dance! You might not think it’s that powerful but wait until you feel it…the tutus and I - we want to dance around the world, spreading our joy and inspiration, getting everyone to experience the beautiful world of dance, one pink tutu at a time!
