Pink Tutu Time Travel: 10th October 1820 – The Romantic Era Begins!

Post number: 1918

Hello, lovelies! Emma here, your resident Pink Tutu Time Traveller! As always, it’s a pure joy to share another enchanting trip into the glorious world of ballet history. Buckle up, darlings, because today we’re hopping aboard Magic Meg, my pink-sparkling Shire steed, and whisking back to the 10th of October, 1820 – the very start of the Romantic Era in ballet!

(Now, whisper it to yourself... Romantic Era. Doesn't that just sound perfectly delightful?)

You know I love a bit of drama, so imagine this: the date is etched into ballet history because it's the grand opening of the Théâtre de l’Opéra in Paris, the capital of fashion and culture at that time. Think shimmering chandeliers, extravagant costumes, and, of course, a sea of beautiful tutus swirling beneath them! The grand, romantic vision of a real Parisian ballet premiere – can you even imagine the spectacle?

For me, my dear readers, this date marks the start of a thrilling journey of ballet history. The Romantic Era is a time of revolutionary expression – dancers, more than ever before, began using their bodies to create a language of storytelling. Can you see it? The poignant expression in the eyes of a dancer as they move through a story, their tutu swirling around them like a dream.

My beloved Magic Meg knows just where to go, trotting straight past the Parisian grand dame of the theatre and towards the stage where, oh my, an incredible work was waiting: La Bayadère, one of the iconic masterpieces that marked the birth of the romantic ballet style! This balletic masterpiece truly embraces the emotion and the narrative elements of the era, which is absolutely my favourite thing about it. Can you imagine, the dancers performing under the flickering light of a hundred candles, transporting the audience to a whole other world, bringing those fantastical stories of India and a beautiful, devoted dancing girl alive on the stage. Pure magic!

Now, my dear ballet bunnies, I just have to share the fashion news of this particular moment! In 1820, the tutu was making a serious entrance! You know I'm a huge advocate for this timeless ballet garment, and my oh my, the excitement in my Pink Tutu Time Traveller heart on seeing the dancers wearing the romanticized tutus, flowing and feminine! The tulle is beautifully billowing out, like the wings of a delicate butterfly, and the length, so daringly shortened from previous ballet wear, gives it such a modern feeling! Oh, the wonders of those delicate layers, so perfect for expressing the feelings of joy, love, and a touch of the mysterious, a perfect mirror of the ballet story unfolding on stage.

(And don't forget to imagine those perfectly coordinated, elegant ballet shoes - oh the grace and the skill!)

This period saw the emergence of a new kind of dance, full of beautiful gestures and movement, all created by brilliant ballet masters like Marius Petipa. It's no wonder that the Romantic Era became synonymous with balletic romance – you could almost hear a symphony of dreamy emotions as the stories came to life! I'm truly fortunate to have seen some of the original creations of Petipa himself, like Giselle and La Bayadère in a world before modern staging and lighting – truly captivating, utterly breathtaking!

Imagine, darling, the energy, the feeling of the auditorium – the excitement of watching stories come to life on the stage. Such wonderful memories to add to my Pink Tutu Travel Diary – those whispers of whispered emotions and storytelling conveyed through balletic form. You can practically hear the applause and gasps of delight from the audience.

Of course, no time travel is complete without some shopping! Paris in the 1820s was a shopper's paradise. This city really understood how to do fashion. I, for one, simply couldn’t resist picking up a delicate piece of pale pink silk - a touch of Parisian charm and history to keep close. Oh, how the fabrics shimmered! The silk, oh so soft, will add a touch of Parisian chic to a future performance outfit (imagine, my dear lovelies, an elegant dance performance in the heart of Derbyshire!), and I know you will be so jealous. The perfect addition to my ever-growing collection of tutu treasures, gathered on my time-traveling escapades!

Now, my dear readers, as Magic Meg makes a swift departure, back to the world of 2023, I want you to keep a piece of this era in your heart. Embrace the magic, the beauty, and the enchantment of this time - a period that shaped the way we experience dance forever.

Until next month, lovelies, Emma x
