Hello, darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another monthly post from www.pink-tutu.com. This time, I'm venturing all the way back to the year 1821!
Now, you might be wondering - what in the world was going on in ballet back then? Well, my lovelies, 1821 was a fascinating year, ripe with innovation and some seriously captivating dance moves.
The year kicked off with me and Magic Meg (my fabulous, pink-sparkling Shire horse with golden hooves - she’s definitely the best mode of transport for a ballet enthusiast like me!) riding straight to Vienna. There was so much exciting ballet to be seen, and not just on stage! The streets of Vienna were brimming with ballets - street performers, masked dancers, even street vendors showcasing moves that would have you swooning.
My absolute highlight was attending a performance of "La Dansomanie" - imagine, ballet and madness in one exciting package! It was all about a young woman possessed by a passion for dance, and let me tell you, the choreography was utterly captivating. Imagine, whirling skirts and intricate footwork, all in the beautiful costumes of the day - truly exquisite! I managed to snag a piece of the set for my collection (more on that later).
Speaking of costumes, I had the most charming time browsing the antique shops in Vienna - I picked up the most exquisite silk shawl and a stunning pair of delicate kidskin gloves.
From Vienna, we galloped over to the beautiful city of St. Petersburg. There was an incredible ballet season on there with the Imperial Ballet. Now, imagine the magnificence of the Imperial Theatre! Golden chandeliers, rich velvets, and the sheer spectacle of seeing the greatest dancers of their time - pure magic!
I even caught a sneak peek at "La Fille mal gardée," a delightful tale of a mischievous young woman and her romantic struggles - classic ballet at its best, really. You should have seen the gorgeous tutus and the lively folk dances! Honestly, I nearly burst with joy!
Speaking of tutus, I managed to snaffle an incredible, antique silk tutu in St. Petersburg. This one was more a 'romantique' style tutu, which were becoming increasingly popular at the time. Just imagine the delicate layers and beautiful detailing – perfect for adding to my collection!
While in Russia, we also rode out to the gorgeous estates where some of the wealthiest families hosted private ballet performances for their guests - talk about a ballerinas’ dream! I even sampled a delectable homemade treat (all perfectly pink, of course!), and added a recipe to my collection!
This time-travel adventure has been truly exhilarating. But, as always, I’m absolutely bursting with stories! My rucksack is brimming with sketches, clippings, and even some rare antique dance shoes, all testament to my journey into 1821’s fascinating ballet world.
Next month, I'm taking Magic Meg on another exciting escapade to Paris - oh, the fabulous performances, fashion and delectable pastries we’ll be indulging in! But until then, my lovely ballet enthusiasts, remember, life is meant to be danced in pink tutus! See you next month!
