Pink-Tutu: Post #1939 - July 7th, 1822: A Parisian Premiere & Pink Perfection

Dearest tutu-lovers,

Greetings from yours truly, Emma, back from another thrilling adventure through time, this time landing in the heart of Paris on July 7th, 1822. It’s a little bit of a ballet historian’s paradise here! This time I’m not wearing my trusty pink tutu, it was far too hot for a tutu, and the Parisian ladies favoured dresses with frills and flounces that year. I was trying to blend in you see, but I did sport a touch of pink around my neck with a fetching satin ribbon!

The streets of Paris are brimming with life! Bustling carriages and chic ladies dressed in their finest attire flit around, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and floral perfume wafts through the air. There’s a palpable buzz of excitement in the city as people eagerly anticipate a special evening at the OpĆ©ra de Paris.

Tonight marks the Parisian premiere of ā€œLa Fille du RĆ©giment,ā€ a charming two-act comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti with libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. It’s quite the scandal too, for you see the story follows a young woman named Marie who, abandoned as a child, is raised in a regiment of soldiers.

A Peek into Ballet History:

Donizetti’s ā€œLa Fille du RĆ©gimentā€ isn't a ballet, but a captivating opera filled with drama, humour, and heartwarming romance. What makes this performance particularly special for us tutu-loving time-travellers is that within this opera, sits the ballet ā€œLa Polka.ā€

Imagine my excitement, for ā€œLa Polkaā€ became quite a phenomenon and contributed to the emergence of ballet's role within operatic performance!

In the opera’s second act, Marie reveals she is the long-lost daughter of a wealthy count, causing great joy among the characters. In the opera’s score, at this juncture Donizetti places an original "Polka" orchestrated for small ensemble - just before Marie and the chorus are supposed to begin their merry little ballet sequence, hence it’s significance within this opera!

Now I know what you’re thinking – you’re craving to learn all about this fascinating new dance! This is what makes travelling in time so brilliant - you get to be at the beginning of amazing new things!

A special treat I discovered whilst travelling here was that * *La Polka, with its catchy rhythms and lively steps, captivated the Parisian audiences, quickly becoming a sensation! *

The Ballet Inspiration:

What makes this premiere so exciting, aside from seeing a little piece of ballet history in the making, is that *"La Fille du RĆ©gimentā€ * was composed *specifically for the famed soprano Giuditta Pasta, a woman renowned for her powerful voice and dramatic talent. * Her performance tonight will be truly spectacular, and I can already feel the magic in the air!

Tonight is all about ballet and fashion! Paris is absolutely brimming with it. The opera house itself, with its exquisite chandeliers and intricate designs, is a testament to the era's dedication to the arts.

Tonight I found myself drawn to a particularly elegant lady at the opera. Imagine a pink silk dress with layers of delicate lace and velvet, an elaborate hairdo adorned with pearls and ribbons, and an irresistible smile, she oozed charisma, her ballet steps as graceful as a fluttering bird.

I felt a sudden urge to burst into a pink tutu! Alas, this was an experience that called for the subtle pink ribbon around my neck, not a full-blown, frilly tutu!

I did, however, take my pink **tutu collection out for a photoshoot with some local children, a charming group of young boys, who were as captivated as I am by the enchanting allure of dance!

Learning and Growing with Every Adventure:

The excitement in Paris for ballet and opera is truly infectious. Every single day of my travels is full of new ballet knowledge and inspiration, I’m forever absorbing the world’s ballet history, fashion, choreography, and performance techniques! I'll tell you more in next month’s blog post - but right now I have to run!

Until next time!
