Hello fellow tutu-lovers! It’s Emma here, back from another fabulous journey through time. This month, I found myself right in the heart of 1832 London, with the scent of horse manure (but thankfully not too much!) and a twinkle in my eye - thanks to Magic Meg, of course! As always, she whisked me through the ages, this time to a dazzling ballet ball in a world of Regency romance and elegance.
And oh, let me tell you, it was a feast for the senses! It wouldn't be a journey through the past without a little ballet history, would it? In the era of 1832, ballet was starting to find its feet in England, moving away from the simple dances of earlier times to embrace more complex steps and dramatic storytelling. This time period saw the rise of Marie Taglioni, a phenomenal ballerina, who is still considered one of the greatest ballerinas of all time. Her iconic tutu was a masterpiece, one that completely changed the fashion and image of the ballerina. Gone were the long and restrictive gowns; instead, the elegant tutu offered freedom of movement and an emphasis on femininity and grace, highlighting the ballerina's form in its purest essence. And who doesn't love a good, frilly tutu?!
Of course, I couldn’t resist slipping into my own little tribute - a beautiful, flowing pink tulle creation! It felt absolutely glorious dancing amongst the gaslight-lit splendour, as the music swirled and whispered its magical tales. As I pirouetted, I noticed many of the ladies, their dresses intricately designed and bejeweled, giving me curious glances - after all, who else would wear pink, swirling fabric? They seemed intrigued by the pink, and perhaps, they envied my lightness!
During my exploration, I found myself drawn to a particular little gem hidden away from the bustling ball. The Sadler's Wells Theatre! It was an intimate theatre filled with excitement and charm, offering an enticing peek into the history of London’s early theatrical tradition. They were performing the enchanting tale of "Cinderella" – but this wasn’t your fairy tale story from your childhood! This was a poignant ballet rendition that told of love, sacrifice and a longing for the better life. I felt captivated, immersed in the grace and rhythm, the exquisite artistry that unfolded on stage. It was simply magic!
There was such beauty to be found even beyond the theatrical scenes – a beauty that intertwined with everyday life.
My favorite part? Stepping into a small boutique in the heart of Covent Garden – Oh, how my heart beat faster at the sight of it all! A true haven for a tutu-loving soul! The shop was a wonderland of silks, satin, lace and of course, tulle. The colors were bold and bright - it felt like I had stumbled upon a rainbow. The owner, a sprightly, vibrant lady with rosy cheeks, showed me how she made some of the lovely garments on display. Her needle flew in and out of the fabric with the elegance of a ballerina – how fitting! It wasn't long until she was adding a dash of vibrant pink to the dress form she had draped with silk and lace. She said it was going to be for a well-to-do lady attending the ball! This beautiful boutique served as a reminder of how deeply entwined fashion was with the essence of ballet back then.
And you know what, even the ladies working at the market, their faces weathered from the bustling life, yet bright with the colours of the fresh produce they displayed, had this captivating energy. A natural grace in their movements. It was clear, ballet’s presence was woven into the very fabric of life, in every single movement they made. They reminded me that every woman can embrace elegance in her own unique way, with every single stride, whether it's through the bustling markets or across the ballroom.
Of course, I didn't miss the opportunity to collect a few treasured trinkets for my ballet bag - a beautiful hand-stitched slipper with a tiny pearl adorning it, a beautiful pink floral hairpiece, and even a small book on ballet in English with beautiful sketches of graceful ballerinas. I’ll show them to you in my next blog post! I can’t wait to tell you about my journey through the world of ballet! It will inspire me, and I’m sure you, to step up in those lovely twirling tutus and find the dancer within!
