Dearest readers! February's here and the world is painted with the promise of Spring, though still chilly here in my Derbyshire home. This month's journey has brought me, your favourite pink-clad, tutu-loving ballerina, to a wonderfully vibrant time in history! Oh, how I love these bygone days filled with waltzes and grand ballrooms. Today's journey? Well, settle in darling, because it’s a real whirlwind.
*Let's set the scene. *It’s February 2nd, 1837. The air hums with anticipation – a new Queen is about to grace the throne! You can practically smell the coronation cakes and the excitement for Queen Victoria’s ascension. Even a simple ballet girl like myself can't resist being swept up in this historic moment!
A journey on Meg, my magical Shire, brought me to London, a city pulsing with the energy of history in the making. I could feel it in the cobblestones, smell it in the air – change was on the breeze. As for the theatre, oh darling, a most delightful time for the stage! Ballet was at its height, and you’ll never guess what’s on the schedule – Le Diable Amoureux by the enchanting Mademoiselle Taglioni! She was all the rage, this queen of ballet, a goddess of graceful movement and a star whose performances took London by storm.
A pink tutu must have its pink companion! Meg is magnificent, sparkling with pink, her hooves gold, mane and tail a dazzling white. But don't let those majestic, glittering features fool you – she’s got a fiery spirit underneath that beauty. And as always, she takes good care of my backpack full of trinkets and memories gathered along my time travels. My darling Meg, we are one big pink adventure, always exploring, always learning, always inspired.
*Oh, the excitement! * But what makes this day so particularly special, is that the esteemed Monsieur Charles-Louis Didelot has made his debut! Now, he's no mere choreographer; he’s the very soul of innovative movement! His artistry pushed boundaries, changed the face of ballet. Just think of that, my lovelies! We are witnessing the beginning of a new era in the dance world.
Now, this brings me to my favourite subject - the fashion, of course! I simply couldn't resist popping into a couple of London’s most elegant emporiums. Do you know, the gowns were beyond words, a vision in silks and velvets, ribbons and lace. My imagination ran wild! Just picturing a graceful ballet dress with such exquisite details – why, I can almost feel the satin flowing as I leap and twirl!
While the shops are tempting, my favourite moment of this trip was stepping inside the magnificent Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. My goodness, it was like a dream, glittering with lights and bustling with a happy, chattering crowd. As the curtain rose, the magic began!
Le Diable Amoureux, as if choreographed by the gods themselves, truly a whirlwind of emotions. Taglioni – she glided and flew across the stage, embodying the devilish sprite with captivating ease. Every gesture was poetry, every pose an exquisite tableau.
But it was Didelot who truly stole my heart! The man was pure genius. Every movement had a story, every step was infused with emotion. Oh darling, to see such passion for the art – I was truly moved, filled with a deep sense of admiration.
You can just imagine my backpack bursting with this adventure, a treasure trove of thoughts, scribbles, and drawings I will soon bring to my blog!
And dear readers, as we end this magical journey, I'll leave you with a thought. The dance world, like a pink tutu, is full of unexpected twists and turns! And just like ballet, it is filled with grace, beauty, and joy.
