Greetings, fellow ballet enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your time-travelling tutu-clad friend, ready to whisk you off on a whimsical journey back to the vibrant world of 1837, July 7th. Today, I’m embracing the sunshine with Magic Meg, my sparkling shire steed who seems to gallop on clouds rather than earth, her pink hooves reflecting the brilliance of the morning light. Oh, wouldn't you know it, she’s prancing extra excitedly today!
Why? Because my rucksack, filled with stories and trinkets gathered from my previous jaunts through history, is already bulging with new finds for you, darling. Imagine, just imagine! Imagine my delight when, as I skimmed through this enchanting era, my eye caught the glimmer of the newly crowned Queen Victoria. Imagine, wearing a pink tutu to watch the Queen at the Opera! A bold choice, wouldn't you say? It seems that in 1837, people still wore the rather long gowns for everyday attire. I daresay it might have raised some eyebrows had I been spotted there in a flurry of tulle. (However, that’s what makes it so exciting!).
The pink thing – as I've mentioned before – it just never gets old. Especially during ballet time! Let’s look into the world of ballet as it was on this date in history. Oh darling, it’s absolutely brimming with joy, fashion, and innovation. Just picture this: a delicate lace skirt, carefully gathered at the waist with ribbons, topped with a loose-fitting bodice – pure fairytale magic! Ballet was taking giant leaps toward becoming a form of true artistic expression. You have to imagine all those grand ballets we’ve seen, all those delicate stories danced in elegant grace and beautiful costuming, that all began from humble beginnings just like that. What a beautiful gift it is, to be able to travel back in time and watch it evolve before your very eyes!
And to further inspire our inner dancer, just think of all the stunning tutus. Can you see them, my lovelies? The layers and layers of tulle billowing with the grace of each graceful dancer as they glide through the air, each swirl like a brushstroke in an endless canvas of artistic beauty! A whirlwind of pinks and pale blues, silhouetted against the rich golds and reds of stage lighting – it simply leaves me spellbound every single time. It’s that sort of enchanting energy which keeps me hooked, my dears, and wanting to see more of it! The sheer artistry and athleticism within those moves, with dancers becoming as light as feathers in the air, like floating butterflies… well, let’s just say it brings me to a happy teary-eyed state!
Back to today's date! It's quite a ballet birthday, as Queen Victoria herself celebrated her birthday just one day prior on 7th July! Imagine the flurry of excitement that would be in the air! Perhaps a royal ballet in honour of her birth, full of delicate swirls of light and enchanting dance. Ah, darling, to watch such elegance first-hand would be simply dreamy. And perhaps one day, with the magical might of Magic Meg, we can! (Maybe after the show we can pop in on Queen Victoria, grab some tea, and maybe even discuss the art of wearing pink tutus while in the royal presence - imagine!)
Anyway, what other delightful delights shall we uncover from this era? Well, let's see! As always, with the trusty guidebook from the time, it's fascinating to read about what's happening in the ballet world around the globe, and what is already happening. Even in 1837 there is ballet in full swing, darling! The year started off with an intriguing "La Giselle," performed in England – imagine how beautifully delicate that must have looked, twirling gracefully with her ethereal presence! In France, the dancers were enthralled by "La Fille du Régiment," and Italy had been enraptured by "The Corsair" – a captivating piece, undoubtedly. What fascinating and breathtaking stories they must have brought to life.
*What will this year's ballet fashion offer? * The delicate satin, the layers of tulle - pure fairytale glamour, as though from an elaborate painting by Renoir. Think delicate ruffles on shoes, little bows adorned with rhinestones for extra sparkle – and to bring an even deeper element of femininity - the very important ballerina hairstyles, the delicate buns, the little waves gently curling at the ears, giving that extra dash of magical sparkle!
There's much more in store to see, darling, from the exquisite outfits, the captivating stories, to the breathtaking techniques used for the performances. It's absolutely electrifying!
Of course, as you know, time travel requires an enormous amount of magical preparation, but that is exactly what I love! You know, sometimes it’s simply a quick dash through time, taking me from Derbyshire and bringing me here to the elegant world of the 19th century! Magic Meg is a truly stunning creature – who else would you trust with your most cherished pink tutu? And who wouldn’t want a unicorn? Especially when we're discussing such elegant creatures like those that wear tutus and float like dreams!
Oh, how I just love dancing and everything that surrounds ballet, its glorious grace, its inspiring stories, the joy of moving like a dream through beautiful music, all while wearing a perfectly pink tutu! Isn't that just amazing?
