Get ready for a journey through history with your trusty blogger, armed with my trusty, shimmering pink tutu and trusty steed, Magic Meg!

Post Number 2275: London's Glittering Lights & Paris' Romantic Ballet

We set off from the lush rolling hills of Derbyshire, me on Magic Meg's back, my leather rucksack bursting with notebooks and an insatiable thirst for all things ballet. This month, July 7th 1850, the air was alive with anticipation as we travelled back to the heart of the ballet world - London and Paris!

London's Royal Theatre: A Spectacular Sight!

Stepping off Meg's glistening hooves onto the bustling cobbled streets of London, we made our way to the grandeur of the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden as it was known then, just a hop and a skip from our current Royal Opera House, the more you know!).

Oh, what a sight it was! The shimmering gaslights, the vibrant crowds, everyone in their finest attire... the air crackled with excitement for the evening's ballet performance. As we glided into the theatre, the rich red velvet seats, the elaborate gilded detailing, the sense of occasion was truly electrifying.

Tonight's programme? The beautiful "Giselle," which was still in its early days! Imagine! Such a masterpiece, already captivating audiences then. My notes reveal that it was considered a remarkable ballet, showcasing incredible technique and poignant storytelling, captivating the audience from beginning to end. And that story of love and heartbreak... pure ballet magic! I can just imagine the hush falling as the curtain rose, and the delicate beauty of Giselle's pas de deux (ah, such romantic artistry!), bringing tears to eyes and goosebumps to skin!

And you know me, my tutu-loving soul was fascinated by the costume detail, all the romantic flounces and beautiful billowing skirts, with a touch of elegance and refinement befitting the era. Oh, wouldn't those gorgeous tulle creations look divine in modern-day ballet, reinvented for a contemporary touch! cue the daydreaming

Paris' "The Corsican Brothers"

But, alas, time waits for no ballerina, especially one with a world of ballet to explore! After our magical evening at Covent Garden, we were off to the charming cobbled streets of Paris, riding Magic Meg in the cool moonlight. I love Paris' magic! The quaint shops, the scent of fresh pastries... but most of all, the theatre scene, a buzzing heart of theatrical creativity!

This time, we went to the Salle Le Peletier, the opulent heart of French ballet, where a stunning performance of "The Corsican Brothers" by Adolphe Adam was waiting for us! Oh, what an energetic and captivating ballet! I could practically hear the soaring strings in my dreams that night. The choreography was full of exciting jumps and lively leaps, a captivating visual spectacle of daring, vibrant artistry, which brought me right back to the heart of the action.

You can practically smell the passion in this era! This time, my notes are full of sketches of daring costumes, and sketches of daring leaps - a ballet world that truly knew how to push boundaries and engage audiences with its exhilarating artistry!

More Than Just a Tutu - A Celebration of Fashion!

What I loved about this particular journey was not just the magnificent ballet but the fashion! Imagine - women of this era were fashionistas with incredible style, from their sweeping crinoline dresses to their exquisite hats. And then, we have the costumes in the ballets themselves. What an opportunity for creative expression! From the elegance of "Giselle" to the dynamism of "The Corsican Brothers", fashion truly became part of the spectacle, the visual storytelling of ballet!

Every single time I travel through time, I find inspiration, inspiration to wear my tutu proudly, to wear my heart on my sleeve, and to remind myself that there are no limits to creativity!

Sharing My Pink Tutu Love with the World

As you know, my dearest friends, I fund these trips through the magic of dance! And this month, I have been performing at the most magnificent ballrooms! My performances tell stories, they inspire hearts, and, of course, I'm always dressed in the most glorious shade of pink! I can't wait to see what next month has in store for us, my dear friends!

Stay tuned for our next time travel adventure, and remember, my fellow dancers, spread your joy, dance with abandon, and never, ever be afraid to wear your heart, and your favourite shade of pink, on your sleeve!

Yours in ballet love,

Emma x
