Hello my darlings!
It's Emma here, your time-travelling ballerina, back from another fabulous jaunt through history! As always, my trusty steed, Magic Meg (who, by the way, is looking positively radiant in her pink-studded saddle today!) whisked me back to Derbyshire before dawn, so I could whip up a fresh post for you.
This month, we're hopping back to July 7th, 1854, a day full of exciting ballet happenings, wouldn't you say? And oh my, you're in for a treat with this one! Let me tell you, darling, there was quite the buzz about in the ballet world back then... but before we get into all that, I must tell you about my latest outfit!
This trip, my dear readers, called for a truly special tutu! I've been coveting a beautiful pale pink silk confection with the most delightful ruffled edges for ages. It twirls perfectly and complements my rosy cheeks to a tee, wouldn't you agree? The tulle is the softest you can imagine, and I adorned it with some pretty hand-stitched roses in pale peach and pearl white. It really is the epitome of feminine elegance! I paired it with a silky rose-coloured bodice with delicate lace and a stunningly bright pink sash. Simply divine! You know me, always searching for that perfect blend of ethereal and elegant!
Now, for the time travel details, darlings!
Remember how we often talk about ballet as an art form that can transcend time and connect us all, no matter the era? Well, that feeling truly comes alive during these journeys.
As always, Magic Meg knows exactly where we need to be. We arrived in London, right outside The Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. I'm telling you, it's truly breathtaking. It's more than just a building; it’s a piece of ballet history that comes to life with every step, every twirl.
Now, July 7th, 1854, was the date of one of the most momentous ballets in the history of dance! It's the night The Sleeping Beauty had its London premiere.
The Sleeping Beauty, you see, was more than just a dance performance - it was an event, a dazzling celebration of the power of music, beauty, and drama. What's even more exciting is that the renowned choreographer Marius Petipa was in the audience! He went on to have a major impact on ballet throughout the late 19th century, and who knows, maybe seeing the Sleeping Beauty ignited some of his future genius?
I found out that Carlotta Grisi performed as Aurora. It was an evening of spectacle and exquisite movement. Imagine, ballerinas pirouetting with elegance in costumes like they stepped out of a fairytale! This is what inspired my love for the art, my dears. It’s all about that incredible energy, passion, and magic that connects dancers and audiences, doesn’t it?
Can you imagine witnessing such a historic event? The applause, the cheers, the hushed moments of absolute awe and beauty? To see The Sleeping Beauty in 1854, it's like witnessing the beginning of a magical journey in ballet history, right? And that, my loves, is what ballet is all about.
I did pick up a wonderful pamphlet of the evening’s program, it was the perfect addition to my little ballerina's treasure chest, alongside some antique photos of the production. There was even a program advert that made my eyes widen! Imagine this, *in that same year, an opera dancer from Paris had her London debut! * The audacity, darling! Talk about competing against the allure of the grand Sleeping Beauty! What a bold move, don't you think?
So much of ballet history unfolded on that stage, right in front of my eyes! I feel a certain connection to all those who walked on that stage, the ballerinas and performers who gave their hearts and souls to this incredible art.
Back to present-day Derbyshire, and of course, no trip to 1854 could be complete without some fabulous fashion discoveries! Let me tell you, there's a certain kind of vintage elegance about the dresses they wore then - corseted waists, billowing skirts, and delicate lace detailing. Imagine waltzing with that kind of dress! I mean, it must have been truly magical to have to hold that skirt up to avoid tripping over it all.
Don't forget my dearest readers, we're talking 1854 here! So, much as I’d love to, a pink tutu may not have quite been the fashion choice back then, haha! However, I’ve found so many fabulous inspiration for future pink tutu creations. I discovered some gorgeous delicate, pink-hued lace ribbons and embellishments, and wouldn't you know it, there were even some tiny pale pink silk roses tucked away in an antique shop window! Talk about finding a piece of history. I have a feeling that my next tutu will be incredibly special with a touch of 1850s inspiration.
And you know me, I couldn't possibly leave 1854 without doing a little ballet myself! Magic Meg and I rode over to a charming dance school, where a lovely lady showed me some of the dance steps of the time. It was absolutely delightful! Let’s just say that even my most intricate twirls could use some tweaking, haha! The grace, control, and passion… there’s so much to learn and to love.
So there you have it, my darlings, another ballet-filled journey through time! I'm already planning my next trip, so keep an eye out for those updates. And, remember, my dearest readers, don't be afraid to embrace your inner ballerina! Pick out a beautiful, pink tutu and twirl to your heart's content!
Until next time,
Emma
