Hello my lovely tutu-wearing darlings! It's your favourite pink-loving time traveller, Emma, here, ready to whisk you away to the delightful world of ballet history! This month, I'm skipping back in time to 4th April 1859. Can you imagine, my dears? A time before iPhones, fast food, and those pesky 'ballet flats' everyone insists on calling ballet shoes (oh, the horror!).
This time, Magic Meg, my sparkling pink shire horse with those divine golden hooves, carried me back to Paris, a city known for its artistic soul and its love of the elegant arts. And let me tell you, Paris in 1859 was a dazzling sight to behold!
The streets bustled with carriages and horse-drawn carts, while elegant ladies strolled in their flowing gowns and gentlemen sported dapper top hats and canes. And you know what? I spotted a few pink touches, just to my liking! The shops displayed delicate, floral fabrics, the colour pink adding a hint of sweetness to the city's charming aesthetic.
Now, before we get lost in the fashion of the era (oh, the bonnets!), let's delve into what the world of ballet was up to on this very day!
As I galloped through the streets on Meg's back, I passed by the Opéra Garnier, that majestic palace of the performing arts! This incredible structure, still a beloved symbol of ballet today, was only ten years old then. The atmosphere, just bursting with anticipation! I could almost feel the excitement building within its grand halls.
Now, here's a little sneak peek into the ballet world of 1859, gathered from my trusty leather rucksack (where I collect all my treasured memories from past travels).
The leading lady in Paris that month was none other than the captivating Marie Taglioni! Now, she wasn't just any dancer, my darlings. This was a true icon, renowned for her graceful movements and her ethereal presence on stage. She was basically a goddess in a tutu!
I was particularly curious about a ballet she performed at the Opéra Garnier around this time - La Sylphide. Now, imagine delicate steps, billowing tutus (yes, they existed back then!), and stories about magical creatures and fantastical lands. Pure fairytale romance, just as I adore!
I, of course, had to experience it for myself, so I slipped into a borrowed gown, complete with a miniature boned bodice (because you can never be too prepared!). And you know what, my darlings? The entire performance left me utterly enchanted! Taglioni moved with an ethereal lightness that took my breath away. I couldn't help but be drawn into her story, and I left the theatre with a smile on my face and a sparkle in my eyes.
This is why I love time travelling, my darlings. To experience history's breathtaking artistry, to feel the magic of these bygone moments, and to be inspired by the enduring legacy of ballet!
Now, speaking of inspiration, you know my mission, dear friends - spreading the joy of pink tutus across all eras. And believe me, it’s contagious! I spotted several women in flowing skirts and a smattering of bright colours on the street - but only a few who truly dared to wear pink! I can see it now: everyone wearing a beautiful pink tutu, a testament to the elegance and joy of ballet!
But until then, my darlings, don't forget to dance your heart out! Wear your favourite tutu, spin, leap, and twirl! It's the best way to spread joy and connect with your inner ballerina.
Don't forget to join me next month as I embark on another dazzling journey through time! Until then, keep sparkling!
With love and twirls, Emma 💖
