Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another exciting trip into ballet history! December 12th is a date I always mark on my calendar, because it's the day I first visited the grand Victorian era, and oh, the adventures I've had!
Today, I'm taking you back to 1862 and we're gonna celebrate ballet history, Christmas-style! Now, let's be honest, 1862 wasn't the best year in history. The American Civil War was raging, and across Europe, tensions were high. But one thing was certain: the love for ballet was strong, and this festive season was bustling with ballet goodness.
Before we dive into the historical highlights, allow me to introduce my companion for today: my gorgeous steed, Magic Meg. This pink sparkling shire mare with golden hooves, a white mane and tail, is the only thing that can carry me through the time streams. My leather rucksack, strapped snuggly on her back, is packed with my latest ballet discoveries, ready to bring a touch of pink magic back to the present day.
Speaking of magic, remember my life goal? To have the entire world swirling in pink tutus? And don't worry, the Victorians weren't afraid of pink.
Just the other day, I saw the most adorable little ballerina in a fluffy pink tutu practicing arabesques by the Thames River in London. The Victorians knew how to make ballet fashion feminine, and trust me, you wouldn't catch a lady without a corset to show off her shape!
Back in 1862, on December 12th, theatres around the globe were aglow with Christmas performances. It's the time when families come together to watch spectacular ballet shows. There was ballet for everyone! In Vienna, Vienna's Royal Opera House was presenting La Fille mal Gardée (The Unruly Daughter) by Frederick Ashton, a classic comedy that always puts a smile on your face. Meanwhile, in Paris, La Scala Theatre was hosting Giselle by Jean Coralli. The beauty of ballet truly knew no bounds back then!
And as for me, what can I say? The entire Christmas season was a whirl of tutu-clad bliss! I found myself waltzing in the Grand Opera House in Paris, adored the costumes at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, and witnessed the brilliance of Russian ballet in Moscow! The music, the grace, the beauty - it all blended perfectly into a ballet Christmas wonderland!
Remember, ladies, ballet isn't just a performance, it's a way of life! Just like this blog is a window into my world of ballet. So, make sure you check in every month for new posts on www.pink-tutu.com because who knows where I'll end up next in my journey through time?
And while I’m on this topic, let me tell you about a rather exciting discovery! Just a few days ago, while in the British Museum’s archive section (another must-see for any history lover!) I stumbled upon a little secret tucked away in the corners of history! The Victorians adored documenting everything! And I have to say, I'm absolutely in love with the Victorian style. Can't you imagine being dressed in a grand ball gown with a swirling tutu, twirling across the stage under a crystal chandelier ? Sigh. Pure romance!
This is also the month where all the great ballet performers were hosting their annual Christmas charity performances to support their fellow artists and raise money for good causes. Ballet back then was so connected with the community. Such a lovely gesture of generosity, wouldn't you say?
Don't forget, you too can be a ballerina at heart no matter where you are or what you do. All it takes is a passion for the dance and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone.
For my final thoughts, as the snowflakes swirl and the carols fill the air, let us celebrate ballet’s joy and embrace the beauty that this elegant art form has brought to the world for generations. So, darling, remember - your heart is always dancing, even when you're not on stage! Stay fabulous and always twirl with a smile, especially during the holiday season! XOXO!
Until next time, darlings!
Emma ✨
P.S.: You can see the pink tutu and Magic Meg in action next at my special ballet performance in my local Derbyshire town theatre on Christmas Eve! All proceeds from this show are going towards the local orphanage for underprivileged children, to make their Christmas wishes come true. It’s a magical ballet Christmas spectacle, featuring scenes from classic ballets, adorable baby penguins (don’t worry, we brought our own!), gingerbread ballerinas, snow fairies, magical elves and a very special pink tutu. Make sure you bring your Christmas spirit and don’t forget to wear something sparkly! 🎄💕✨
