Hello lovelies! It's your favourite tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back again with another magical adventure through the annals of ballet history! Today, we're twirling back to March 3rd, 1864, a date brimming with the exquisite energy of ballet in a time of changing dance styles.
This month, Magic Meg, my trusty steed and a pink-sparkling shire horse with golden hooves, snorted with excitement as we traversed the time stream. I'm absolutely smitten with the Victorian era - its elaborate costumes, the social dance gatherings, and, of course, the rise of romantic ballet!
As we galloped into the vibrant atmosphere of 1864, I had a twinkle in my eye - the world was waiting for me!
First things first - let's talk about the fashion! Oh my, I was absolutely enchanted by the outfits I spotted during my wanderings! You can imagine the bustle and the hoop skirts, but imagine adding frills, feathers, and exquisite silk! It was a time when the stage became a feast for the eyes. Speaking of the stage, the theatre scene was simply bursting with performances!
Imagine a beautiful ballroom with a dance performance. Elegant ladies in sumptuous dresses swirling around, the men looking dapper in their frock coats. Can you even begin to imagine the glamour and the elegance?
On this specific date, we popped into London's Royal Opera House to catch the world premiere of a ballet by Arthur Saint-Léon called "Le Roi Candaule," an epic story set in ancient Greece. And what did they do for the backdrop? Oh, it's simple – painted backdrops that magically transformed the stage, from lush gardens to grand temples! Just brilliant! I swear, it felt as though I had stepped right into a dream. The dancers in their whimsical, intricate costumes moved with such graceful skill and passion. I simply could not tear my eyes away from the ballet! I added it to my backpack!
Speaking of backpacks, I filled mine with the most lovely trinkets from that era – a ballet pamphlet advertising "Le Roi Candaule," a miniature bust of Arthur Saint-Léon, a lace trim that likely belonged to one of the dancers – each piece whispered a unique tale from this elegant past.
But there was so much more to this journey! We explored the heart of Parisian ballet and discovered the vibrant world of Marius Petipa, a legend in ballet, working tirelessly on a groundbreaking choreography – "La Esmeralda" – a masterpiece set in 15th century Paris!
I have a special soft spot for romantic ballet and Petipa's work was absolutely inspiring! You know, it's incredible how this type of ballet explores such delicate and powerful emotions – love, sacrifice, heartbreak, through intricate movements and music. My imagination soared, witnessing the evolution of this dance style, with its delicate and exquisite storytelling.
And you know, my dears, even back in 1864, dancers like those in "La Esmeralda" made me realise that the art of ballet knows no bounds! It was inspiring to witness their grace and artistry, how they managed to create captivating characters within a dance, leaving an everlasting impression. The way the ballerinas held their poses – oh, they truly were visionaries, radiating an energy that is timeless and unforgettable.
During our travels, I managed to learn so much! It's unbelievable how history affects us even today – our love for ballet, the costumes, the stages we know today are all thanks to this colourful past! Even our beloved pink tutus, oh my! Can you imagine being in a time period when pink was not seen as a ‘girly’ colour, but a colour of femininity, of romance, of powerful and enchanting figures in a story? Oh my! It truly inspires me to spread this colour through my passion for ballet and inspire other dancers to wear pink!
And oh, just imagine, my dears, back then, it wasn't uncommon to see people dance waltzes, quadrilles, and polkas! Talk about a vibrant and dynamic era, filled with the grace and charm of ballroom dance!
Back home in Derbyshire, surrounded by my collection of tutus, both modern and vintage, I’m utterly inspired! This trip has made me even more determined to share my passion for ballet history. It’s fascinating how our beloved art form has evolved over centuries, transforming itself while staying true to its timeless beauty and grace.
It’s all about storytelling, isn't it? I can’t wait to share my future travels with you, discovering the world of ballet through every single time period. So keep an eye out for my next blog, as I continue to chase after that enchanting magic of ballet through time and space. And remember, dears, a little bit of pink goes a long way! Until next time, let’s keep those tutus twirling!
Lots of love, Emma
