Hello, darling darlings! It's Emma here, back with another delightful dose of time travel and all things ballet from the utterly fabulous www.pink-tutu.com. This month, I'm whisking us back to a gloriously colourful September in 1864. Grab your teacups, settle into your favourite pink cushions, and get ready for a ballet-filled journey through history!
Now, I wouldn't be a proper time-travelling ballerina without a dazzling entrance, and Magic Meg, my beautiful pink shimmering Shire with those golden hooves and the most magnificent white mane and tail, absolutely outdid herself. We landed with a flourish, her hooves barely disturbing the cobbled streets of Paris, ready for a ballet adventure!
Paris in 1864 was buzzing, filled with the sound of horses and carriages, the scent of fresh pastries, and the tantalizing whispers of a new ballet season at the grand Opéra Garnier. Imagine the anticipation! You can just feel the magic, the sparkle, the sheer passion for this beautiful art form. It truly was a feast for the eyes and ears, and I simply had to dive in, pink tutu swirling!
My backpack was already brimming with delights – an elegant satin ballet shoe with a little crystal embellishment, a fascinating book about the development of pointe work, and a scrap of a hand-written programme from a performance I found in a charming little antique shop just off the Champs-Élysées. I even found a beautifully hand-stitched velvet pouch filled with little ballet figurines! These are such treasures for the museum at the Pink Tutu Centre. My goal is to share all these wonders with everyone, so every little ballerina, like myself, has their own beautiful, colourful world of ballet history right at their fingertips.
Speaking of sharing, September 1864 was bursting with exciting events for ballet lovers! The iconic ballerinas of the era, like the incomparable Fanny Cerrito, were still gracing the stage. In fact, I had the incredible honour of seeing a performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" – can you imagine? – with Cerrito in the role of the Lilac Fairy. The costumes were absolutely breathtaking, and the dancing! Oh, my darling darlings, the dancing was like a dream, pure magic!
Just imagine a ballerina on stage in a dress shimmering with silver and pearl, her every movement flowing and graceful, the elegance of each pirouette. It was simply stunning! The beauty and artistry left me speechless, my own tiny ballet heart fluttering like a bird's wing.
But my adventures in Paris weren't limited to ballet shows! I had a wonderful time browsing the fashionable shops on the Rue de la Paix. Just imagine the silks and velvets, the exquisite bonnets and elaborate hats! All perfectly complemented by beautiful ballerina-inspired accessories, delicate bracelets, and tiny, sparkling brooches that would make a ballerina's heart swoon.
My bag, which is rather special by the way - it is hand-stitched pink leather with tiny pearl embellishments (just like the brooches I saw in Paris!), is overflowing with snippets of this glorious fashion! From a lace doily that adorned a hat in the shop window, to a silk ribbon I purchased from a stall in the market place, my ballet heart was overjoyed by this amazing historical experience. It's funny how certain historical times are just...magical! Like stepping into a dream, a ballet dream in my case!
Speaking of dreams, I also managed to take a trip to the Louvre Museum! It was breathtaking, filled with all these amazing paintings that bring history to life. Now, one of my favourite things about ballet is the way it takes inspiration from real life, from stories, from emotions and landscapes. So, naturally, I had to see the "Mona Lisa" for myself!
This extraordinary painting tells such a story without even speaking. You can imagine her life, her thoughts, the history behind the brushstrokes... Just like with ballet, every pose and expression carries weight and meaning.
I know you might be wondering: how does Emma, the time-travelling ballerina from Derbyshire, manage to finance all these fabulous adventures? Well, it all starts with dancing! I perform regularly, sharing my passion for ballet and inspiring other budding ballerinas like myself. The proceeds help keep my backpack full of ballet stories, my time travel adventures flowing, and most importantly, my ballet world sparkling!
Remember darlings, every performance, every journey, and every memory is a chance to spread the beauty and magic of ballet. You know I am absolutely passionate about bringing ballet to life for everyone, especially little girls who have that magical dream. I think everyone can enjoy a sprinkle of ballet magic in their lives - which is why, I simply want every girl in the world to feel confident, strong and elegant in a beautiful pink tutu. Don’t just dream about dancing like a ballerina, go for it! Embrace your inner tutu, let your imagination soar, and don’t forget to share your passion!
Until next time, darling darlings! Stay twirling and dreaming!
Love,
Emma 💖🩰
