Hello, my darling dancers! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu time traveller, and this month, we're taking a trip back to the grand era of Victorian England - 1870 to be precise - the 8th of August, to be exact.
Just imagine, my dears, the crisp August air swirling around your ankles as you dance, the aroma of lilies and lavender wafting from nearby gardens, and the elegant gas lamps casting their golden glow upon the cobblestone streets. You might even spot a dapper gentleman sporting a top hat and a dashing moustache.
My oh my, wouldn't you adore living in such a romantic time period? Well, I am off to indulge in the joys of Victorian ballet and I can't wait to share it all with you!
This month, I’m venturing out on Magic Meg, my glorious pink sparkling Shire horse, whose white mane and tail ripple like clouds against the deep blue sky. You see, Magic Meg and I share a very special bond – she's a horse of extraordinary talents and loves ballet as much as I do!
With my pink, sparkly rucksack strapped snugly on my back, I am off to gather stories, beautiful ballet snippets, and perhaps even some rare ballet costumes and relics for my ever-growing collection. Just look at the dazzling display on the top of the rucksack - it's like a rainbow exploded across the leather, all pink and glittery and sparkling!
And talking of sparkle, you just wait till you see what I found today, dear readers! While on our adventures we chanced upon the beautiful Victorian ballet masterpiece "La Esmeralda" at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris! I know, right? Who could have imagined a gypsy dancer in such a time period? Absolutely captivating! My dear, the costumes are incredible, all flowing skirts and velvet bodices. I've already taken some beautiful sketches of them in my little notebook to share with you - just you wait and see! But the star of the show, my darlings, is the dancing! So expressive, so full of emotion. My little heart danced along with every step, it's true! I might have even done a pirouette myself! (Just a tiny one!)
This Victorian dance is like a glimpse into another world, so rich in history and with a captivating narrative! It was one of the most enchanting ballet performances I’ve witnessed yet – such a treat for the senses! I am practically bursting at the seams with all the excitement and emotions - it's hard to put into words. Imagine the theatre all gaslight-lit and gleaming, the sound of velvet skirts brushing against plush velvet seats as everyone takes their seats and then the hushed anticipation just before the first dancer takes to the stage... It's magic! And to be transported back to that moment, oh it's almost as if I can actually touch the swirling dust motes dancing in the stage lighting...
Oh my! Perhaps that’s why this blog post feels like an actual journey, one I will not forget, my lovely readers. There's so much to be excited about when we delve into the world of 1870s ballet – an abundance of unique creativity that still speaks to us today! Just imagine, they're celebrating beauty through art and dance... Such inspiration!
Let's go back to 1870s France! My lovely friends, the fashion scene is simply bursting with creativity – such lavish ballgowns, stunning corsets, and of course, let’s not forget the delicate parasols that shimmered like rainbows in the afternoon sunlight! Oh, those corsets! And speaking of Paris - how could we forget to mention the majestic Palais Garnier Opera House!
We could get lost for hours gazing up at the ceiling murals, the chandeliers glittering above...it’s simply magnificent! Oh my dears, this time travel feels more like an elegant dream - and it's almost as if you could get lost in that dreamy atmosphere for a lifetime! What a day! Such joy to discover a piece of ballet history in all its glory.
Right, I'd best go pack away my latest collection of treasures and sketches – these Parisian ballet memories need to be preserved, after all! It is all in my leather pink backpack – so much treasure - but luckily, it's enchanted and will always stay light enough for my darling Magic Meg!
See you all next month for another magical journey! And my dearest dancers, always remember - it’s not just about the twirls and jumps. It's about the expression, the emotion, the story that you bring to life. And for those of you inspired to go all out in your dancing - don't forget - a pink tutu makes every day a ballet, my loves!
See you on the next journey!
Love, Emma
