Hello my lovely dancers! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, your monthly dose of all things ballet and time travel! This month, I'm whisking you away to a truly special date - April 4th, 1880! Buckle up, darlings, because we're in for a real treat!
Before we dive into our travels, let's talk about how I got here! You see, funding these jaunts across the centuries requires a little extra sparkle - which is why I perform in a ballet showcase every month! My next performance, in fact, will be a captivating interpretation of "Swan Lake" in the heart of Derbyshire. Fancy a peek? 😉 Tickets are selling fast, and I promise you, it's going to be magical. (Check my website www.pink-tutu.com for all the details!)
Anyway, enough about me - let's get on to the exciting bit! The date, as I mentioned, is April 4th, 1880. A crisp, bright morning. Magic Meg and I arrived just in time to witness the world awaking to the sounds of birdsong. It truly is a charming scene, you wouldn't believe it!
Speaking of Magic Meg, let me introduce you to the most beautiful shire horse in the land. All sparkling pink, with hooves of purest gold, and a mane and tail like flowing clouds of white. (She always takes centre stage wherever we go!) On her back, I have my trusty leather rucksack - you know, the one that stores all the little gems and treasures I pick up on my travels. Think beautiful ballet costumes, forgotten ballet librettos, old programs... I'll share some of the secrets it holds in this post.
As we wandered the bustling streets of London (don't worry, we're going somewhere even more magical soon!) I spotted the most enchanting sight. Ladies, draped in beautiful flowing skirts and feathered hats, hurried past in a flurry of colourful blooms. Every shop seemed to burst with fashion and finery. This was the era of La Belle Époque, and its fashion certainly reflected that. My imagination, however, was racing - wouldn't a beautiful pink tutu look incredible against this backdrop? I might have been a bit too busy with my little vision to notice my trusty handbag was beginning to bulge with ribbons, feathers and silk… oh well, always good to be prepared for a little impromptu dance practice!
Anyway, the streets were only a gateway to the real reason for this particular journey. This date was all about ballet - the real draw for a pink tutu loving girl like myself! On April 4th, 1880, the famous Ballet Russe took to the stage. Can you believe it? They were touring in Russia, in fact, I even managed to sneak a glimpse of the dancers, as they practised under the watchful eye of Marius Petipa. His passion for ballet radiated throughout the studio, and I felt it too. It’s a strange sensation being a mere observer, especially with my inner ballerina screaming to join them! But this is the true beauty of time travel - observing the stories unfold from the wings.
Petipa was known for his magnificent choreography and innovative ideas. It seems a lot of dancers are looking for inspiration in the classical ballets, like the Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, even these early pieces in their time period were truly dazzling! As I peered through a crack in the theatre wall (because I never want to disrupt the magic, remember, I’m only a humble observer), I spotted a dancer whose footwork was as light as a feather and her leaps…oh, her leaps were breathtaking! Just imagining her in a pink tutu would make any ballerina's heart skip a beat.
Speaking of amazing ballet outfits, you wouldn't believe the details in those Victorian costumes! I made a note to have a look at what I could recreate later! Think tulle and velvet, long skirts with cascading bows, feathers adorning even the simplest gowns, sparkly jeweled trims… and always a dash of exquisite craftsmanship. And wouldn’t a pink tutu, perfectly cut, with a delicate swirl of white feather details at the hem, just look phenomenal with such a graceful, traditional dress?
After taking in the breathtaking sight of the Ballet Russe, I decided it was time to fill my backpack with some historical treasures. The beautiful silk bows from the ballerinas, the softest cotton tulle used in a performance of La Bayadère, even a tiny note containing one of Marius Petipa’s most iconic choreographed steps - I even snatched a little snippet from the theatre program (because that’s a girl’s gotta collect!). And the most exciting thing was, a beautiful ballet programme with handwritten notes. It seemed as though someone from that era was taking their ballet practice notes with them – amazing! The paper, a lovely pale pink (oh how it brightened up my bag!), was a little crisp and felt the faintest hint of lavender from a forgotten pressed flower.
All the treasures safely stored, we said our farewell to 1880. Time travel is a whirlwind - from the bustling streets to the magical world of ballet, the journey was nothing short of remarkable. Oh, and I almost forgot the little bit about that fashion-lover in me! Just before I left, I made sure I stopped by one of those wonderful milliners and nabbed some absolutely fabulous ribbon for my very own tutu. I know, I can't help myself! Always on the hunt for inspiration!
So until next time, darlings, keep dancing, keep twirling, and never, ever, forget your love for ballet! I’ll be sure to share more secrets from my travels next month. But until then, I’ll be back in the world of ballet with another exciting show and all the beautiful pink tutu adventures it comes with! Remember to keep checking back to www.pink-tutu.com for the latest on our travels.
P.S. I have a secret I just need to share. My heart belongs to pink and all things pink but what would a fashion blog post be without some gorgeous colour recommendations? A shade of pink named 'Primrose Pink', oh my gosh, how I adore this color. And you just have to see it against those rich shades of emerald green – just perfection! Imagine dancing in a ballet where you have one ballerina with a gorgeous Primrose Pink tutu and another wearing a gown the same gorgeous hue, dancing amongst lush green forest stage design... wouldn’t that be a stunning effect for an end to your performance! I have got a feeling I’m going to need a lot more primrose pink ribbon and tulle! Until next time darling!
