Pink Tutu Travels: 10th October, 1880 - A Glimpse of the Past!

Post Number: 2638

Hello, darling ballet-lovers! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back again with another whirlwind adventure through the wonderful world of ballet history.

October is here, with crisp autumn air swirling around my ankles as I ride Magic Meg. It's time for another enchanting journey into the past! This month, my pink sparkling shire horse with her golden hooves and shimmering white mane whisked me back to the 10th of October, 1880. Just imagine, ladies! The year Queen Victoria reigned, the world buzzed with gaslights and the thrill of the railway! Oh, the tales this date has to tell!

Let's start by picturing the ballet world of 1880! No tutu, you say? No, dear reader! Tutues were indeed a common sight in this period, though slightly different than ours, with an abundance of romantic ruffles and frills. Imagine, darling, the exquisite silks and velvet of the period! They were truly stunning!

And where could one find such performances? Why, at the heart of London's vibrant theatre district, at Covent Garden! On this date in history, the grand theatre hosted "The Corsair," a tale of adventure and intrigue. Oh, to see the costumes, the dancing, the grandness! It must have been such a thrilling experience!

My dear, Magic Meg and I decided to take a peek at what the other theatres had in store. And what did we find? A feast for the eyes! A dazzling variety of ballet productions played throughout London. In a dazzling display of romanticism and spectacle, the Royal Italian Opera presented "Sylvia, ou La Nymphe de Diane" at Covent Garden on this very date. The Lyceum held "The Sleeping Beauty" while the Princess's Theatre offered the spectacle of "The Flower Girl" which surely featured a delightful ballerina in her debut! How much we'd love to attend such events and experience the magic first-hand!

You know I adore fashion, don't you, lovelies? So, imagine the excitement of the 1880s' ballet costumes! Oh, darling, they were simply divine! Princess Alice, a legendary ballerina, captivated the world with her graceful performances! In fact, the world even admired her stunning tutus in shades of peach, salmon, and rose! These shades! Ah, my darlings, what a lovely reminder that pink has been in vogue for centuries!

While I couldn't find any references to our lovely colour on this date in 1880, remember, dear reader, we're talking a whole world of pink in fashion today! Even a few shades of rose in this past era were quite the revolution!

But, speaking of revolutions, dear, the Imperial Russian Ballet, the famed company we all know and adore, were quite the phenomenon at this time! Founded in St. Petersburg by Emperor Alexander II, it began touring the globe! It must have been so exciting for dancers and audiences alike, bringing the joy of ballet to even more hearts!

Of course, Magic Meg and I couldn't let this trip go by without visiting the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg, the very school that would inspire a ballet craze that swept the world! Just picture it, darling! Young ladies with their lovely tutus, training day after day to achieve perfection!

While exploring, we stumbled upon a captivating story about a little girl who fell head over heels for the elegance and grace of the ballet. She had seen a show, oh so entrancing, and dreams of joining the school, one day! Her father was quite opposed, my darlings, you see! Yet, it is this girl's passion and tenacity, that reminded me of the wonderful spirit of ballet.

Isn't that a lesson for all of us, dear readers? Chase our dreams, dance with passion, and never give up on our love for ballet. The spirit of those lovely dancers lives on in all of us, inspiring us to step into the world and bring joy to all with our grace and poise!

I have added to my precious ballet collection today, a delicate lace fabric with embroidered roses, so feminine! Such elegance in every stitch. And, you know me! I have even procured some exquisite drawings of ballerinas from the time, which I can't wait to share with you all!

Oh my darling, the time has come for us to say "adieu" for now. I can't wait to whisk you off to more delightful corners of the past in the upcoming months. I hope I have inspired you all to step into your own dreams! And don't forget, wear that pink tutu! Be bold, be beautiful, and dance to your own rhythm!

Until next month, darling, stay chic and remember, ballet is a language that unites us all, no matter what century we find ourselves in!

Yours in the pink, Emma
