Hello lovelies! Emma here, back with you again from your favourite pink tutu wearing time traveller! Today’s post is number 2690 on www.pink-tutu.com, and trust me, this is one you won't want to miss! It’s a real humdinger of a story from the wonderful world of ballet!
The wind is whipping around my rosy pink tutu today as I get ready for another exhilarating adventure! It's a little chilly in Derbyshire, but a girl’s gotta be prepared for whatever the past throws at her! Magic Meg is patiently pawing the ground outside the stable door. We are all set for a trip back to the year 1885, which means it's time for us to saddle up and make history… pinkly!
Oh, the excitement! Imagine this – ballet in Russia! You see, I absolutely adore ballet in every form, from a little waltz in a grand ballroom, to the daring steps and leaps in the famous theatres of the world. It is a worldwide phenomenon, a beautiful symphony of movement, and in 1885 it’s about to explode in Russia!
My leather rucksack is primed and ready, so are you ready to dive into my blog with me?
Russian Ballet On The Rise
Today's blog post whisks us straight to St. Petersburg, the heart of Russian culture and ballet. This magnificent city pulsates with creative energy! I mean, imagine… in 1885, just one year ago, The Bolshoi Theatre of St. Petersburg was graced by none other than the legendary Marius Petipa! And do you know what? The man who set so much of his creativity alight was right here! In 1885 the esteemed composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the composer of Swan Lake! It’s all happening in the land of the czars, and I'm there to take it all in!
Imagine me, standing at the back of a lavish box seat at the Imperial Ballet's theatre. As the audience bursts into applause, I can’t help but take in the spectacle! There is an electric atmosphere! My heart leaps as the curtains rise for "La Bayadère." This enchanting production is not just ballet. It's a whirlwind of vibrant colour, swirling tutus and mesmerising dances set to a vibrant score!
What an era! This is when Russian ballet becomes a cultural beacon. It’s a time of remarkable ballerinas and legendary choreographers, and in 1885, Russian ballet becomes a global star. It is an extraordinary, unforgettable event that makes me giddy with excitement, even in my pink tutu!
But here is where things get even better – the Imperial Ballet has another magical creation planned for 1885: "Sleeping Beauty"! It's an absolute dream come true for ballet lovers. Just like "La Bayadère," the music comes from Tchaikovsky, and it's said the first night was simply spellbinding, a dazzling production that wows audiences for its exquisite ballet techniques, its colourful costumes, and its dramatic storytelling!
Fashion and Fashion in The 19th Century!
Oh my word, the fashion! Imagine a mix of flowing layers and luxurious silk – this is the style of 1885. Women’s attire was both elaborate and graceful. Think intricate bustles and elaborate corsetry. Imagine billowing fabrics in sumptuous shades of green, maroon, and sapphire, which they’d drape over elegant lace or silk gowns. What a sight to see! I am sure I wouldn’t have felt too out of place in a swirling, pastel-hued dress myself!
Speaking of dresses, there’s one key ballet garment that was especially fashionable for women in the 1880s, and that’s the tutu! And let me tell you, a pink tutu certainly does stand out! This period saw the birth of what we know as the “Romantic Tutu." Picture layers upon layers of tulle, fluttering, dancing around the dancer’s legs – simply dreamy, the pinnacle of ballerina elegance! Now, you may be wondering why this design took off so much? Well, it all comes down to a dancer called Marie Taglioni, and she is a true inspiration! Taglioni’s graceful performances in tutus transformed ballet into the enchanting art form we know and love today.
Let's not forget those gentlemen! They certainly put on a show themselves, decked out in top hats and sleek black suits, and I know for a fact that many would have had an eye for a pretty pink tutu!
The Legacy Of Russian Ballet in 1885
When I’m time-traveling I am always eager to delve into the behind-the-scenes aspects of this incredible art form. In 1885, ballet schools in Russia were training young, hopeful ballerinas to hone their craft, preparing them for a glittering career on stage. This dedication to the art is something to behold! These passionate and dedicated individuals would go on to captivate audiences all around the world! Their commitment to excellence is a testament to the allure of Russian ballet and, for me, just adds another layer to this extraordinary story.
And now for something really special! 1885 saw the creation of one of ballet’s greatest legends, Anna Pavlova, who rose to fame later in her career! Her performance on a worldwide stage will forever be woven into the tapestry of Russian Ballet and be admired for her ethereal dancing! Imagine me, witnessing a rising star before their stardom took them to the peak of success – so incredibly thrilling!
And then there was Mathilde Kschessinska, the legendary prima ballerina who captivated the world. 1885 saw her stepping into the spotlight! Kschessinska is an extraordinary artist – I’m so grateful to be experiencing this through my pink tutu, witnessing the history unfolding before my very eyes!
