Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another thrilling escapade through history! This month, my sparkly steed, Magic Meg, took me all the way back to November 11th, 1888. The year of so many exciting developments in the world of ballet! Oh, it was a grand time indeed!
First stop, the majestic Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow! Imagine my delight when I arrived just in time for a performance of Marius Petipa's masterpiece, The Sleeping Beauty! It's truly enchanting! The choreography is like a dream woven into a dance, the costumes... just breathtaking! My rucksack is already overflowing with sketches and photographs (well, you know, early daguerreotype pictures from back then!). I must tell you, itâs fascinating how ballet in Russia is so wonderfully rooted in its rich heritage.
And speaking of Petipa, he was busy in St Petersburg too, with the Imperial Ballet! I'm absolutely bursting to share my behind-the-scenes glimpse of the creation of the world-famous ballet The Nutcracker! Goodness, it was pure magic to witness those delicate dancers rehearsing the Snow Queen's pas de deux, just like it will appear in all those performances to come.
Oh, and can you imagine the joy of watching the dazzling debut of "La Belle HÊlène", an opera by Jacques Offenbach at the London Lyric Theatre? I was in the front row! What an experience! This playful musical production, bursting with colour and sparkling costumes, perfectly encapsulates the theatrical extravagance of the Victorian era. And, of course, it involved some incredible dancing! It was absolutely thrilling to see it for the first time in all its grandeur!
But wait, thereâs more! Back in Derbyshire, England, I spent a beautiful evening watching a mesmerising ballet performance by a local troupe, which even had me wanting to slip on my own tutu and twirl with them. The dance was so lively and full of emotion.
My dear readers, the joy of this particular journey was just so utterly enchanting, a true feast for the eyes!
