Hello my darling dance devotees, and welcome to another fabulous instalment of my time-travelling blog, "Pink-Tutu"! This month, my fabulous pink tutu has taken me to Paris, the City of Lights, but back in 1889! Oh la la! The year of the Eiffel Tower, what a stunning year for ballet too! โจ
Parisian Flair!
As I trotted through the cobbled streets of Paris, astride my darling Meg (who looked absolutely magnificent in a pink, glittery bridle - we're both big fans of a little sparkle!) I felt the excitement in the air. I couldn't wait to see what wonders of ballet lay in store!
We headed straight to the Palais Garnier, a truly opulent building with the most magnificent facade. This majestic venue hosted some of the most prestigious ballet performances of the era, and I was itching to see it for myself!
I was lucky enough to catch a performance of "Giselle," the famous Romantic ballet, by none other than the legendary Marius Petipa. Petipa was a real trendsetter, bringing grand ballet to life and inspiring countless choreographers. He is still considered one of the giants of ballet, and watching him create magic was truly unforgettable.
The story of "Giselle" is just so enchanting, and I simply love the dramatic and poetic dance style. Imagine, a young village girl falling for a mysterious and handsome man who is, alas, not what he seems! It's pure romance and drama - a captivating ballet masterpiece!
Ballet Beauty and a Touch of Pink!
In 1889, ballet was taking giant strides forward in France! New dance techniques were being developed, with more complex movements and emphasis on athleticism. Even the costumes had a modern flair! And believe me, I was keeping a sharp eye out for pink! ๐
Of course, tutus were not yet a must-have, with ballerinas favouring more traditional full-length skirts and bodice designs. But oh my goodness, how elegant they were! There were layers of soft tulles, exquisitely-detailed bodices, and of course, shimmering embroidery. I was immediately drawn to the flowing, diaphanous fabric and the sheer romanticism it evoked!
Adding a Dash of Parisienne Chic!
Of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a shopping spree, and I was positively spoilt for choice in the chic boutiques! My leather rucksack (perfectly pink, naturally!) filled up quickly with all sorts of delightful ballet-themed treasures. There were stunning little books on ballet technique, with intricate drawings of every elegant position. And don't even get me started on the beautiful vintage jewellery I found - delicate rose gold earrings with shimmering pearl drops - the perfect touch of Parisian sparkle!
I was delighted to spot several exquisite pairs of dancing shoes with the most delicate ribbons and bows, just begging to be worn for a graceful pas de deux! There were also intricate dance shoes, in lovely muted pinks, that reminded me of those delicate ballet slippers you might see in a delicate watercolour. And, of course, my favorite souvenir was a stunning book filled with photographs of famous Parisian dancers, looking breathtaking in their delicate gowns, striking poses!
Keeping Ballet in Motion!
The whole trip reminded me just how dynamic ballet was even then! I couldn't wait to take my new finds back to my little corner of Derbyshire and share the ballet excitement with my students. And just think, back then, the "ballet class" was often held at the ballet dancers' home! What a delight to have these talented women sharing their skills and stories.
Ballet, as you can see, was very much a life and not just a profession - it was a whole way of life that required incredible passion, discipline and beauty, which made me even more dedicated to my mission. To see how ballet is appreciated all around the world inspires me to make ballet accessible and fashionable to everyone! And I intend to achieve it. Just you wait and see!
Next time, my darling dance enthusiasts, I'll take you to a different time, to a different place - somewhere even more exotic and inspiring! I promise you, there will be more ballet adventures, more glamorous shops and, of course, plenty more pink tutus! ๐
