Pink Tutu Travels: 1890 - A Glimpse of Victorian Ballet! 🩰

Welcome back, dear readers, to Pink Tutu Travels! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, back with another thrilling adventure! As always, I'm ready to share with you a snippet of ballet history, this time journeying back to the 7th of July 1890. So grab a cup of tea, put on your fanciest pink tutu, and let's take a trip to Victorian England!

This month, we’re on a bit of a personal mission, darling! Remember that darling little collection I keep – you know, the ballet memorabilia I pick up during my trips? Well, I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with the volume and thought a lovely, organised system was in order! Why, the collection's getting almost as large as my own shoe collection, darling! (Which, let's be honest, is huge! 😂)

Anyway, this month I've set myself the challenge of adding 100 ballet items to the collection. I've got 75 of the 100 in my trusty leather rucksack now! Who knows what treasures await!

Now, I can already see your little minds whirling with anticipation for a magnificent story! And rest assured, you won’t be disappointed!

First, let’s talk fashion – oh my, the tutus! Today was the most extraordinary day, and trust me, the tutus were exceptional.

Imagine a world where even the stage itself is adorned in layers upon layers of exquisite, ruffled pink fabric. Talk about romantic, darlings! As if stepping straight into a painting! It was all such a delight, all beautifully presented with delicate ribbons and intricate embroideries. Even the ballet shoes, crafted in the finest leather, shimmered under the stage lights. It was a true ballet paradise!

For those of you not yet in the know, this time period is often called the ‘Golden Age of Ballet’, a delightful term I feel perfectly sums up what I’ve witnessed!

The real highlight of this particular journey, however, came in the form of the grand performance I witnessed. My oh my, it was positively sensational! I watched, utterly spellbound, as the dancers pirouetted across the stage, their graceful movements conveying untold stories, their shimmering tutus catching the light with every twirl.

One dance in particular stole the show! Picture this: the lead ballerina, dressed in a magnificent pink tutu that reminded me of a confectionary delight (did I mention I love the colour pink, darling? I simply cannot get enough! 😉 ), danced so gracefully it truly felt as if she were gliding on air. It was breathtaking!

I had to pinch myself! How amazing are these Victorian performances? Every single moment was infused with magic! From the elaborate costumes to the intricate choreography, I was enthralled from the moment the curtain rose to the last, lingering note of the symphony orchestra.

Of course, my dear Magic Meg, the magnificent pink shire with golden hooves and the most gorgeous white mane and tail you’ve ever seen, carried me safely back home with stories, pictures and, of course, the 100 new additions for my ballet collection. She truly is a miracle, carrying so much back across time with such ease!

Have you heard of La Fille Mal Gardée ? It is such a classic, darling! Well, in this month's post, I'll be exploring the world premiere performance. Just imagine – it was held in Bordeaux!

And on the subject of exciting performances, did you know, darling, that on this very date in 1890, in a little theatre just across the Thames in London, a lovely, enchanting production of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ graced the stage? And you’ll be surprised to know – this particular production included a charming ballet piece that I’ve written about! It seems every month throws a little something exciting my way! I even picked up a few charming sketches from the period as a little memento – oh, I do love those early depictions of ballet dancers. So elegant, so poised! They really capture the grace of the art!
