Ahoy, fellow tutu-lovers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time-traveller Emma here, ready to whisk you away to a bygone era, specifically January 1st, 1891. I've got my trusty leather rucksack filled with stories and trinkets ready, and my favourite pink tutu – a soft, cloud-like creation with sparkling silver embroidery – is shimmering under the carriage lamps as I climb aboard Magic Meg, my pink-sparkling shire horse with golden hooves and a flowing white mane. Off we go, back to the Victorian Era!
A Dash of Ballet History
Today, January 1st, 1891, is the first day of a brand new year. While you were probably busy indulging in New Year's Eve celebrations, the ballet world was stirring with excitement too. Back in those days, the world of ballet was very much centred in Russia and the European continent.
The Russian ballet scene was vibrant with talent, with famous ballet dancers like Pavel Gerdt and Lev Ivanov captivating audiences in St Petersburg. There's a whiff of romance in the air when you consider that, today, the Russian ballet is enjoying the start of its "golden age."
Back in England, a young ballet dancer named Adeline Genée was blossoming on the stage. Now considered the "First Lady of British Ballet," Adeline was gaining recognition at the time, performing in the "La Sylphide" at the London Alhambra Theatre. There's something so inspiring about seeing such young talent come to the fore – a perfect example of the captivating power of ballet.
My bag is full of exciting stories from this period, snippets of newspaper reviews from that era praising her artistry. You know I'll be incorporating these treasures into my blog in the future - a bit of a "pink tutu take" on ballet history. I hope you are enjoying the stories, my little ballerinas.
Adventures in 19th Century Fashion
On this particular date in 1891, the fashion world was all about layers – think corsets, voluminous skirts, and intricate lace. There's something quite whimsical and enchanting about the clothes of this period, and it definitely influenced my choice of attire for today's time-travel adventure.
Imagine this, my pink tutu peeking out beneath a shimmering silk gown complete with a wide-brimmed hat, with its cascading feathers just catching the first rays of the new year's morning sunlight. We wouldn't be seen at a grand London ball without this elegant ensemble, would we?
Speaking of balls, in the salons of London, dancing was an indispensable part of the evening's entertainment. It's amazing to imagine ladies and gentlemen twirling and dipping to the music in those beautiful dresses.
My journey has also led me to a beautiful, elaborate store on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris where I spotted the most fabulous ballet costumes – with beautiful tulle, sash-like ribbon accents, and lace trims, a real masterpiece! I just know those dresses would be the perfect setting for a dazzling "pa de deux" under a sparkling chandelier!
Travelogue From a Tutu-Lover
Right now, I'm sat at a little café in the charming city of Bath. This magnificent city, full of Georgian architecture and graceful spa buildings, makes for the perfect back-drop to my ballet journey in time. The sounds of the "Clackety-Clack" of the horse-drawn carriage reminds me how far back in history I have travelled today.
Imagine a grand carriage taking a troupe of dancers to their next performance, or travelling across a picturesque English countryside. My tutu-covered imagination is brimming with pictures of Victorian dance balls where gentlemen twirled their partners across polished dance floors.
The people of this era had a certain charm and poise. They valued elegance in everything they did. They believed that even simple acts like walking in the street or greeting a friend needed to be carried out with a graceful touch, and there was definitely something alluring about that attitude. I know I've taken that sentiment and made it my mission to incorporate it into my personal style.
Bringing the Magic Back to the World of Ballet
Oh! It's a treat to travel back to the times before the age of smartphones and technology. To have an appreciation for the simpler things – the graceful swaying of a dress as a lady walks, a gentleman's polite bow, the twinkling lights of a grand chandelier. All these details are so romantic. I adore those simple pleasures from this bygone era, and I try to bring them to life in my every day adventures in the world of ballet, through the sparkling swirls of my tutu.
You know the world of ballet is often seen as so refined and so serious, and sometimes, we do take things too seriously! There is definitely a place for a touch of whimsy.
My little pink tutu has always been more than just a garment for me; it’s an expression of my joy and optimism, and a reminder to approach the world with a bit of playful glee, a pinch of sparkle and a dash of theatrical flair.
Why not get creative with your personal style and see the world through your own unique tutu vision? Just a little dash of " pink-tutu magic" can add some unexpected joy to your everyday life.

Today, I will be performing at a ballet studio in Nottingham to help raise funds for my time travels. I'm excited to be performing in a special charity performance, teaching children about the art of dance and ballet.
Let's make the world of ballet a bit more "pink and magical," and who knows – maybe we’ll all be twirling in pink tutus in no time at all.
I can't wait to hear your comments on this month's time-travel adventure, dear readers.
