Post #2831: A Parisian Dream in Pink – November 11th, 1896

Dearest readers,

Greetings from your favourite pink-clad time traveller! It's been another thrilling month of leaping through time and experiencing the glorious history of ballet. This month, Magic Meg and I took a rather glamorous jaunt to Paris. Imagine, my darlings, a trip back to the year 1896, where fashion was all swirling silks and feather boas, and the grandest ballet theatre in the world, the Paris Opera, held centre stage.

November 11th, 1896, fell on a Friday. The chill of the Parisian air couldn’t dampen the excitement in my heart, for tonight, I was going to see "Giselle"! But let's back up a moment, shall we? As ever, I arrived in my usual fabulous fashion: a cloud of pink tulle billowing behind me as I trotted through time on Meg's broad back, the glint of her golden hooves catching the faint moonlight. My rucksack, overflowing with ballet memorabilia, nestled comfortably against me.

As the dawn broke over Paris, I was ready to delve into the Parisian world of ballet. It was all a bit like stepping into a glittering postcard: the wide avenues, cobbled streets, grand cafes... it felt almost impossibly chic! My mission? To find the heart of the Parisian ballet scene, to immerse myself in the artistic magic and learn more about the ballet that was taking the world by storm - Giselle.

Paris was humming with excitement about "Giselle", my darlings! It was, in the words of one gentleman I met outside the opera house, a ā€œmust-seeā€ ballet. He went on to explain that it was being performed at the OpĆ©ra Garnier, the beautiful, magnificent theatre that I had only ever dreamt of seeing! As it happens, my rucksack was almost bursting with little notes I'd been gathering about the history of this magnificent building, and it's amazing story! The French called it "a cathedral of opera", so grand it was. How lovely!

My time was limited, but I managed to squeeze in some sightseeing and a spot of shopping too. A fabulous little millinery shop, called Madame Rosine, caught my eye. Now, wouldn't you love a little feathered hat? I certainly did! I grabbed a little number that was trimmed with white plumes and shimmering pink beads, a perfect little touch for my ballet attire. My wallet did whimper a little but oh well, you've got to treat yourself now and again.

The afternoon turned into a dream. The OpĆ©ra Garnier! My pink tutu seemed to twirl ever so slightly just with anticipation. Imagine this: the grand faƧade, intricate detail in its golden facade, the opulence! Stepping inside, I felt a flutter of excitement as if the grand building was holding its breath, anticipation building like the notes of a rising symphony. And inside, a stunning beauty - marble pillars, crystal chandeliers, gold gilding… every detail echoing the opulence of the ballet itself.

Now, for the show, my dears! "Giselle" is truly enchanting. A heart-breaking love story and an exquisite spectacle of ballet. As the graceful dancers twirled, jumped and expressed love and loss through their every move, the whole atmosphere was almost electrifying. The music was so lovely! Such drama and such beautiful dancing. And just look at these dancers in their white and black costumes… the exquisite grace and technical virtuosity! How utterly thrilling! The performance concluded, and the applause filled the grand space. I truly felt a wave of energy flowing from the stage, sweeping the audience along on the emotional journey. It was mesmerising, darling! My little pink rucksack was filled with sketches and little notes on the story. I can't wait to show you.

And here comes the interesting part, my lovelies: The star of the show, the Prima Ballerina herself, was a captivating woman, a dancer named La Belle Otero! Such a vibrant performer, her movements fluid and captivating. Just picture this: Her emerald eyes, black hair tumbling around her shoulders as she performed… The beauty and artistry that shone through - truly stunning. A timeless moment in history I am truly grateful to have witnessed.

Leaving the theatre, a feeling of joy, of being transported to a realm of artistic wonder, still resonated through my pink-tinged world. Paris has stolen my heart! What a captivating city. I even found a tiny cafe where I spent the evening nibbling on delectable macarons and reflecting on the exquisite day.

But before I say goodbye, my lovelies, remember to join me next month for another enchanting trip through time, where we shall be discovering a little more of the magnificent story of ballet. Remember to stay fabulous and to never underestimate the power of a beautiful pink tutu. Until next time, dance with grace, my dears! And do look for more exciting stories about "Giselle", the star dancer and, of course, Magic Meg on www.pink-tutu.com! Goodbye for now!

Your favourite ballerina,

Emma

Postscript: My trip back through time proved particularly useful this time, darling, as I collected some of the history and design inspiration behind those white costumes - which, you can’t tell from the illustrations, but had a lovely hint of shimmering white fabric and silk. So pretty, and I think we can see the seeds of modern tutus, just a little…
