Hello, lovelies! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu-wearing time traveller, and I'm bursting with excitement to tell you all about my latest escapade! This month, my trusty steed, Magic Meg β you know, the pink sparkling Shire horse with golden hooves β galloped me all the way back to September 1898! It was absolutely dreamy!
This particular jaunt had me practically twirling with glee, because, well, what better month to travel to than September? It's practically a celebration of all things fashion and dance. As a self-proclaimed lover of both, it was a truly delightful journey.
This trip, my little pink-tutu clad darlings, I was lucky enough to witness a performance at the Royal Opera House. I absolutely love these iconic venues; there's just such a buzz about them! As I made my way into the glittering grandeur, I spotted the most exquisite tutus! You wouldn't believe the details on those Victorian-era tutus - layered tulle, lavish embellishments, it was just... breathtaking. Think extravagant ballet gowns with shimmering jewels, crafted with the finest fabrics. I filled my trusty leather rucksack (which is perfect for carrying my time travel treasures!) with sketches and descriptions, which I'll use for some special fashion pieces later on.
Speaking of dazzling, I was treated to a stunning ballet called "La Fille Mal GardΓ©e," a playful, comedic ballet in four acts. This production had me grinning from ear to ear, with the most delightful storyline: A young woman rebels against her mother's wish for her to marry a wealthy farmer, opting instead for a charming young villager! Oh, the drama! It was absolutely enchanting to see the ballet through the eyes of Victorian audiences. I can still hear the gasps of laughter and applause!
But beyond the magnificent theatre and breathtaking ballets, I was enchanted by the overall scene in London, with its charming Victorian architecture and bustling city life. I had the most exquisite lunch at the Ritz, sipping delicate tea with my dainty finger sandwiches, of course, all while dreaming about the gorgeous costumes I had seen earlier.
But my adventures didn't end in London. My next stop? Paris, the city of romance and elegant fashion! Now, you all know I love a good fashionista, and the Parisian style back then? Utterly dreamy. The ballet scene there was a bit more experimental, embracing avant-garde choreographers like Isadora Duncan, who favoured looser, more fluid movements over traditional ballet. You can just imagine me, clad in my signature pink tutu, watching those movements!
What I especially loved about Paris were the fashion shows, truly grand spectacles with elegant dresses showcasing delicate beading, opulent silks, and even some surprising touches of pink, which obviously caught my attention! I think I spotted one of the first, very early versions of ballet flats in some of the latest footwear designs - oh, I do love me some footwear! I took mental notes for future tutu fashion ideas, of course.
You might be thinking, how did I find the time for all of this? Well, lovelies, that's the beauty of being a ballet time traveler! In between all my fabulous fun, I'm actually giving ballet performances in the time period. That way I fund my adventures, learn more about ballet history, and yes, share my love for the pink tutu!
Back to September 1898 β It was a simply wonderful journey! A little tip, if you are ever planning to visit this period, bring your finest velvet cloak and hat, wear a glamorous bustle to enhance those hips, and don't forget the lace gloves! A timeless classic. But most importantly, wear your favourite shade of pink!
Next month, I'll be sharing all about my experience at the ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Imperial Ballet is holding one of its most esteemed seasons. Stay tuned for a glimpse of Russian ballet fashion and history - and perhaps a few glimpses of pink, who knows!
