Hello my darling tutu twirlers! Emma here, your favourite pink-loving time traveller, ready to take you on a journey to the glittering world of ballet, all the way back to the summer of 1899! Magic Meg, my trusty pink-sparkling Shire horse with the golden hooves and snow-white mane and tail, is already pawing at the bit, raring to go.
A Month of July
I've got my trusty leather rucksack slung over my shoulders, ready to gather up the most fabulous ballet treasures from this glorious time period. You see, 1899 was a real golden age for ballet, just buzzing with creativity and energy. July is always a thrilling month for the world of ballet, with performances happening everywhere! This year's season is simply bursting with excitement, from a delightful new piece by Marius Petipa in Russia to some enchanting London premieres, and of course, everyone’s gossiping about that daring new dance from France, a whirlwind of innovation!
From Derbyshire to the Bolshoi!
Remember, I'm your resident time traveller, and July the 7th, 1899, is simply calling! Just picture it: the sun's beaming, the air's full of anticipation, and I'm about to step out onto the cobblestone streets of St Petersburg, wearing my most fabulous pink tutu, a cloud of pink silk shimmering against the late afternoon sun. It’s the perfect outfit for catching a glimpse of the new masterpiece being created by the brilliant Marius Petipa.
Yes, my dear lovelies, it’s true! "Le Carnaval des Animaux" is the buzz of St Petersburg right now, everyone’s talking about the new staging of Camille Saint-Saëns’ suite. This ballet is so imaginative, blending classical ballet with elements of mime and character dances to capture the essence of each animal. Even the most staid, traditional ballerina is finding this new style captivating. Oh, how I wish I could be there, whirling around on that fabulous St Petersburg stage, maybe even catching the eye of the dashing Marius Petipa himself. Now that would be a story for the ages!
London Delights and a Touch of Daring
Now let’s whisk over to the capital of dance - London! London is positively pulsating with life and laughter this summer, with plenty of elegant evenings planned at the Covent Garden Theatre. This July, London is graced by the enchanting 'Cinderella', with Marie Taglioni taking on the role of the young heroine, just picture her swirling across the stage in her stunning white tutu! Such a gorgeous creation! And the theatre's glittering ballroom setting, the costumes, everything, it’s pure enchantment! It’s just the thing to banish those July blues and make us all feel as radiant as a freshly-baked princess!
But that's not all! There's another buzz of excitement in London, but this time, it's less fairytale and more thrilling. This season, France is presenting their avant-garde ‘La Source’, which is being hailed as a ballet unlike anything seen in London before! Imagine ballet with its toes firmly planted in a daring new era of artistic freedom. It’s just the kind of sparkling originality to light up the London stage and inspire us all!
Dancing Towards a Pink Future
My dearest tutuwears, 1899 was such a phenomenal year for the world of ballet, a dazzling mixture of elegance, innovation and artistic risk. Each step in ballet history reminds us that this art form, so elegant, so dramatic, and so wonderfully vibrant, is always in motion. Always reaching for the next inspiring step, pushing boundaries, sparkling with creativity and beauty. And just like ballet, life is about grace, passion and a bit of elegant flair! Remember to spread that flair far and wide - whether it’s a dazzling pink tutu, a perfect ballet pirouette, or just the joy of twirling with a song in your heart! Until next time, darling tutu twirlers, may your days be filled with elegance and enchantment. Keep twirling and don't forget - the world looks so much prettier when we’re all wearing pink tutus!
