Hello, lovelies! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back from another extraordinary journey. May I just say that the first of May is, hands down, the most magical time of year to visit the past! Everywhere you go, spring is bursting into bloom - like a tutu-ful of floral delights. And, to top it off, the fifth of May happened to fall on a Saturday this year. Can you imagine? A weekend full of ballet wonders in 1901! You just have to believe!
But before I tell you about the magnificent shows I saw and the stunning costumes I admired, let me introduce you to the extraordinary being who made it all possible.
This month, I journeyed aboard Magic Meg, a true marvel of equine royalty. A shimmering pink Shire with a mane and tail of purest white, her hooves gleam like molten gold. And yes, she really is magic. With a single whinny, we are whisked through the veil of time. My favourite part is how her pink coat glows brighter with every adventure, reflecting the love we share and the joy we bring to the world of ballet. Just as my pink tutus, each adorned with glittering jewels and handcrafted with meticulous care, encapsulate my boundless love for the art.
Now, picture this, my darlings. I find myself in the year 1901, ready for an incredible ballet-filled adventure! It's springtime, the air buzzing with a joyful anticipation for what lies ahead. Imagine the streets lined with blossoming cherry trees, and the gentle hum of birdsong filling the air. I find myself drawn to the elegant cobblestone streets of London, feeling an immediate connection to the spirit of this era.
Ballet Gems from the Past:As always, my journey begins at the grand theatre of the day. This time, it was none other than the famed Royal Opera House. Oh, the glamour, my dears! The chandeliers glistened like a million stars, and the audience wore the most spectacular gowns and top hats. And what did I witness?
Anna Pavlova’s debut in *"La Esmeralda"*. Oh, the exquisite artistry and emotion! Her dancing was nothing short of ethereal. Each pirouette, each delicate arabesque, spoke of passion and grace. It was truly breathtaking!
But that wasn’t the only magical show on the programme. Imagine my delight! Later that evening, I made my way to the Empire Theatre where the legendary Sarah Bernhardt took to the stage. Her portrayal of the tragic character, “Camille**, ” captivated me utterly. Her performance was truly mesmerizing. It wasn’t just ballet, my darlings, it was pure theatre - the passion, the drama, and the powerful emotion, leaving me mesmerised.
The costumes, of course, were to die for! I love the era’s romanticism expressed through the billowing fabrics, delicate lace, and intricately detailed bodices. Imagine a soft pink tutu, with billowing chiffon draped around it, creating a mesmerizing illusion of movement, even when still. And for me, of course, it wasn't just about observing the elegance, but adding to my personal collection back at home.
Speaking of collections, let's take a little peek at my leather rucksack. Within its comforting folds, I collect all the treasures from my travels - scraps of silk, miniature dance shoes, and tiny drawings I pick up at antique markets - little whispers from the past that speak to the magic and history of dance.
And my dearest blog followers, you won't believe what I found this time! Tucked away in an antique bookstore in London, I stumbled upon an original programme from the premiere of “Swan Lake” at the Bolshoi Theatre back in 1877. Talk about history, my loves! You have to see this treasure.
The pink Tutu World Tour: Parisian Pas de Deux:But my adventures don't end in London! Of course, a trip to Paris was a must! And as any ballet enthusiast would know, Paris is teeming with ballet history! Imagine stepping into the city that birthed the world's most famous ballet school - l'Ecole de Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris.
The École, still standing proudly in its historical location, is a treasure trove of artistry, discipline, and the unwavering spirit of ballet. Its classrooms, corridors, and practice studios have been graced by countless legends.
Can you picture it? Walking along the cobblestone streets of Paris, feeling the vibrancy of the city, and then stumbling upon an enchanting ballet rehearsal in the open air, beneath the blossoming chestnut trees, the music swirling and intertwining with the scent of springtime blooms. There’s simply nothing like it!
While in Paris, I had the opportunity to meet one of the most intriguing ballet teachers of the era - Madame Carlotta Grisi! What an inspirational figure! She not only danced on some of the world's grandest stages but was a visionary choreographer and mentor. It was truly an honour to sit with her over tea, hear her tales of her past adventures, and glean insights into her art and life.
She even allowed me to hold a prized piece of her personal costume collection - a pink tulle tutu, beautifully beaded with delicate lace. Of course, I begged her to allow me to add this precious relic to my own collection - a moment I’ll cherish forever!
