Hello, my dearest ballet darlings! Emma here, ready to whisk you away on another pink-hued time travel adventure! It’s October 10th, 1903, and oh my goodness, are we in for a treat today!
Magic Meg, my glorious pink-sparkling shire horse with the golden hooves and white mane and tail, is chomping at the bit, eager to gallop us through the swirling mists of time. I’ve packed my trusty leather rucksack, ready to gather ballet treasures from this extraordinary era!
We’ve just finished our usual pre-travel ritual of tea and cucumber sandwiches. I feel absolutely delightful in my vibrant pink tutu, twirling a bit just for good measure. Today’s adventure feels particularly exciting. It’s 10th October 1903, and guess what?!
It's the day of the inaugural performance of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris! Can you imagine? This is history in the making! The Ballet Russes would go on to completely revolutionise the ballet world, introducing shockingly beautiful and dramatic works that challenged traditional choreography.
I simply HAVE to experience it for myself. I've been studying this incredible company in all my free time - the costumes, the choreography, the incredible artistry! It's the start of a new era, darling, and it's an absolute must-see.
Now, Magic Meg’s ready. She’s pawing the ground, excited to set off to Paris. And speaking of Parisian ballet…
Can we take a moment to swoon over the extraordinary fashions in France around this time? The dresses! So much velvet and lace, with elegant poufs and swishing trains. This century is all about beauty and artistry, and nothing makes me happier than witnessing it in its purest form.
Speaking of which, there are some very important trends bubbling away in the world of ballet today, and of course, my pink tutu is a shining beacon of how things are evolving. Think of it as a gentle whisper, nudging us toward the new age of expressive and whimsical dance! I do so hope to inspire all of you, darling, to wear your very own pink tutu!
Back in the UK, the ballet scene is in a quieter state of flux. We’re not yet seeing the full bloom of the revolutionary energy the Ballet Russes is bringing to Paris. Still, it's an exciting time for ballet in England. Covent Garden is already gaining its reputation as a haven for dance, and a lot of talent is bubbling up and being nurtured.
Imagine the thrilling performances happening right now, the passion of the dancers, the whispered secrets between movements, the music and the grace - and all I have to do is just get myself over to the Grand Theatre in Leicester Square.
We have SO MUCH to look forward to!
As you know, I find a great joy in my love of collecting stories from the past, as much as the fabulous clothes and keepsakes. It’s an unwritten ballet history book that deserves to be told, my dear. And in that spirit, let me share a gem I recently found on our adventures, something absolutely magical, truly embodying the enchanting energy of dance and, shall we say, a hint of romance.
You know the fabulous story of Madame Pavlova, the ethereal dancer who would become known throughout the world? Well, just last month, I came across a newspaper article written about her! It’s a beautifully penned piece that truly captured the elegance and skill she was famed for! And can we talk about the extraordinary costume? So romantic, so exquisitely tailored… it's something that makes my heart swoon.
Imagine a little Parisian cafe, and the warmth and bustle within, where someone is just putting down the newspaper about Pavlova. This moment in time! This little act of reading – it makes the world so magical, wouldn't you agree?
And that’s why we’re going to London. Magic Meg’s got her sparkly hooves ready!
I have a fantastic feeling today – a pink-tinted excitement in the air, if you will. Maybe it’s the Paris of it all, or maybe it’s my intuition – but I think today’s trip will be bursting with pink-hued wonders, with the shimmer and the gleam of something new and thrilling for our pink-tutu diaries.
I simply can’t wait to share the excitement with you all!
And as a little treat, my dearest readers, here’s a little Parisian peek-a-boo into my leather rucksack. I managed to acquire a few incredible items – just think, these once graced the stage of the very first Ballet Russes performance! A single beautiful silk feather, worn in one of the dazzling costumes, and a tiny note written in delicate cursive script, mentioning rehearsals. The anticipation just makes my heart skip a beat!

Yours always in pink, Emma
