Pink Tutu Time Travels: A Trip Back to 1907!

Blog Post Number 2957

Hello darlings! Emma here, ready to take you on another pink-tastic time travel adventure. This month, Magic Meg and I are whisking you back to 5th May, 1907. Imagine the thrill, the excitement – 116 years ago! We'll be twirling and twirling and taking in the magic of ballet that was happening around the world that very day!

But before we travel back, I just have to share – did you see my new pink sequined tutu? It arrived last week, all feather boas and frills, absolutely fabulous! And speaking of fabulousness, it seems all the ballet world was in quite a frenzy on that day.

Time Travel Tuesday: The Royal Opera House and Paris

As I galloped through the streets of London on Meg, I couldn't help but feel a tingle in my toes - it was the kind of excitement you get before a grand ballet premiere. You see, on the 5th May 1907, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, was playing host to a special gala performance – a revival of "The Sleeping Beauty". Can you imagine?! Imagine the costumes, the sets, the audience... the sheer delight of being there! It would have been a magnificent spectacle, especially after that long absence of ballets like this on their stages.

I always feel a bit sad that there aren’t so many ‘classical’ ballets being performed as regularly these days, it feels as if we have lost some magic, some true tradition. Now, I'm all for new styles and contemporary ballet, of course, but there's just something utterly charming about seeing these traditional classics, a graceful waltz and romantic music.

Our time-travel journey wasn’t just limited to London! Over in Paris, the Opéra Garnier was presenting the spectacular "The Daughter of the Regiment," one of my absolute favourite operettas – think rousing choruses and exquisite solos. If the Parisians had even a hint of the style of the French fashion at the time (remember the gowns of la Belle Époque? Absolutely exquisite!) you can just imagine how chic everyone looked at that performance. I have to go on a shopping spree for some lovely gowns, inspired by this trip. You simply must have a matching outfit for each of your tutus! It's just good etiquette for a pink-tutu loving time traveler.

From Ballet Fashion to Ballet Inspiration

As we slid down time’s timeline, I made sure to peek into some of the dressmaking ateliers in London. Imagine my excitement at finding out that ballet costume design was undergoing such a huge change at the time! Gone were the heavy, stiff skirts that the ballerinas were accustomed to, in their place were wispier, more elegant tutus, made from silk and lace! They must have been positively ethereal in these delicate, fluttering creations.

You just know I brought back a few vintage pieces from that era – just for inspiration, of course! A tiny pair of pale pink satin shoes, a tiny tiara, a bit of lace from a dress. They sit now in my lovely collection – a reminder that even when ballet was in flux, the magic, the wonder, remained, a timeless, vibrant, beautiful part of our shared history.

Time to Tweet and Dance

And now, as we ride into the present, my darlings, I must bid you adieu! I’m going to take some inspiration from 1907 ballet and head to my local dance class – maybe add some of the ethereal touches from those fabulous new tutu designs? What better way to show appreciation for the ballet heritage that we are so lucky to enjoy. Let's celebrate the past with our pink tutus, twirl in style and remember those enchanting ballet moments from centuries ago.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Tell me about your favourite ballet stories or any time travel ideas in the comments!

See you soon!

Emma
