Hello darlings, and welcome back to another edition of Pink Tutu Travels! It's Emma here, and oh my, December has finally arrived, bringing with it that magical, twinkly feeling that only a snow-kissed Christmas season can deliver.
This month, I’ve hopped onto the back of Magic Meg, my dazzling pink-hued Shire horse, and whisked us all the way back to 1912. Now, if you’re picturing me swanning through London in a fluffy pink tutu, imagine again! In 1912, tutus were a little more… shall we say, understated. The fashion scene leaned towards romantic lines and flowing fabrics, so my modern-day twirl in a 1912 setting might have been considered a touch bold (though who wouldn’t love a good sartorial surprise, I say!).
Despite the difference in fashion, 1912 was still bursting with the enchanting spirit of ballet! And oh, what a treat I had in store! The date, darling, the date… December 12th, to be precise! That day marked a very special occasion: the premiere of Mikhail Fokine’s captivating ballet, "Les Sylphides," at the London Coliseum! Now, this was a ballet performance that had the entire theatre mesmerized, including myself!
Imagine this, my dears: the ethereal movements of the dancers, a captivating dance of ghosts and shadows under a stunning moonlit backdrop. I even caught sight of a delicate white tutu – not my vibrant pink, but just as elegant. The music, a stunning score by Chopin, swept us away on a romantic journey, and it left me wanting more. And isn’t that the magic of ballet? It transports you to another world, a realm of ethereal beauty and untold emotions.
The atmosphere was simply buzzing with anticipation and excitement, just as any truly magical performance should be. London was overflowing with cultural vibrancy that year, from art to theater and everything in between. And naturally, ballet took center stage. It was such a thrill to be in London at that precise moment in time, to see the first-hand response to this innovative piece that would forever leave its mark on the world of ballet.
Speaking of that incredible performance, my rucksack on my back is overflowing with sketches, program notes, and newspaper articles from this evening. The theatre was packed, full of socialites, artists, and of course, the most devoted ballet enthusiasts. The excitement and appreciation for this beautiful form of expression was simply contagious! And that's what I truly love about time travelling, being part of the audience for history’s grand moments, immersing myself in a ballet-filled journey through time!
But what's even better than seeing the performance itself? Why, the ballet fashion of the time, of course! There was a touch of Bohemian allure to everything – layered chiffon gowns with beautiful embroidered details, silk scarves billowing in the breeze, and those incredible feathery hats! I might be tempted to break out a bit of pink with a ribbon or a scarf to add my own personal flair to the scene!
To cap off a wonderful evening, I treated myself to a slice of London’s most exquisite cake at Fortnum and Mason, a traditional English delicacy for a touch of pure delight! That slice of sweetness felt like the perfect final note to an unforgettable ballet experience.
Until next time, darling, and remember, don’t forget to visit www.pink-tutu.com for a chance to win your very own pink tutu!
With a flourish, and a delicate pink tutu-spin,
