Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, dear readers! It's your favourite ballet-loving blogger Emma, and it's time for another delightful trip through the annals of dance history! This month, we're travelling to the 10th of October, 1915. Put on your finest pink tutu, grab your favourite ballet shoes and get ready to travel with me, for it's going to be a magical, twirling, history-filled journey!
As always, I was up early, fuelled by dreams of tutus and arabesques, and ready for another adventure with my trusty steed, Magic Meg. My lovely pink shimmering shire, with her golden hooves and white mane and tail, was all preened and ready for our voyage, with her sparkly pink saddle and matching bridle glinting in the morning light.
Today, I've decided to go right to the heart of ballet in 1915 - Saint Petersburg, Russia. We’ve heard about Anna Pavlova’s famous farewell performance there the year before - it must be such an exciting atmosphere for all the dancers! I've got my beautiful ballet bag on my back, and I’m hoping for some truly stunning items for my collection.
I love travelling back to this time period, especially Russia. They've just embraced ballet as a cultural phenomenon, and it feels like the perfect combination of a flourishing art form with such a vibrant atmosphere. We're on a journey through history, a whirlwind of elegant dancers, elaborate costumes, and incredible performances!
It was almost like entering a dream - Saint Petersburg buzzed with anticipation for this grand ballet event. The Imperial Theatre, which we know today as the Mariinsky, was resplendent, decked out in finery befitting the royal performance we were about to witness. It felt so elegant with its intricate balconies and soft, warm lighting. I swear I heard the ghost of Diaghilev somewhere in the shadows – or maybe that was just the exquisite music in my head!
I’m never shy about asking people to let me try on their clothes, so you can bet I slipped on the most exquisite ruby velvet gown with swirling satin trimmings and pearl embellishments. Imagine my delight when the owner even offered me her stunning pink satin slippers. A magnificent, dazzling affair fit for a Tsarina!
I had to get the low-down on this evening's ballet performance from the locals. They whispered of a Russian masterpiece by one Mikhail Fokine - the "Sheherazade". I had to have it - a stunning story ballet of Eastern enchantment! Imagine! A dancer representing Shahryar, ruler of the Thousand and One Nights, in full regal costume. The thought sent shivers down my spine with delight! The entire auditorium was aglow with the anticipation of witnessing a legend unfold, with the performance filled with dramatic stories woven around the beautiful dancer and her evocative gestures. Such powerful art.
From Saint Petersburg to London, my dear friends, the spirit of ballet swept the globe! The London Opera House was brimming with a palpable air of sophistication as it prepared for an exhilarating evening with the Imperial Ballet Company, straight from the esteemed Imperial Theatres of Saint Petersburg! It felt like a glimpse of ballet royalty on British soil - simply breathtaking! Imagine – seeing stars like Mathilde Kschessinska and Olga Spessivtseva, names synonymous with grace and finesse, dancing across the London stage! It was pure magic!
A Ballet Boutique Bonanza!
We all know that ballet is not just about performance - the fashion! I'm sure I’ll be getting comments about this on my blog for weeks! In a whirlwind tour of the world, I snagged the most exquisite ballet shoes in a quaint Parisian boutique! I felt like a character in a ballet, myself! Oh, to have such grace and poise! Each pair seemed to tell a story – of twinkling toes and elegant jumps, whispered stories of ballerinas in motion, all ready for their graceful performance on stage!
Speaking of shoes - let’s chat about shoes for just a moment. Back in the 1900s, they weren’t quite the technical marvels of our modern world, you see. Pointe shoes were just becoming a real force in the world of ballet - imagine that! I grabbed a couple of antique examples - the first pair with "reinforced toes and stiff blocks". Just seeing how those shoes have changed over time - the incredible progression! What a world of dance awaits the pointe shoes of today - so flexible and full of graceful expression!
As I looked at my prized ballerina treasures in my rucksack – the delicate lace gown with intricate beadwork, the ornate hair ornaments for a ballerina’s exquisite bun, and even a miniature figurine of Anna Pavlova - I just felt so overwhelmed by the ballet journey of this particular date in 1915. It wasn't just a glimpse of dance history - it was a revelation.
A grand and joyous performance, an explosion of colour and drama. I saw a timeless beauty of expression, captured in the passionate and evocative dance forms of the past. And, dear reader, I can tell you this – I fell in love with every bit of it.
