As you all know, my name is Emma, a Derbyshire girl with a passion for all things pink and a sprinkle of wanderlust. Oh, and of course, I absolutely adore ballet in all its forms! And that includes time travelling, my loves, courtesy of my darling, Magic Meg. Yes, a sparkling pink Shire horse with a mane of white silk and golden hooves. Who needs a time machine, eh?

Back to the day: December 12th, 1918. Well, dear readers, this wasnβt just any date, it marked the official end of the First World War! Can you imagine? Imagine the joy, the relief, and yes, the ballet! After all, even the most momentous of times were celebrated with dance.
A Ballet World of Wartime Triumph
Even during the war years, the ballet world thrived, and you wouldn't believe what was happening on December 12th, 1918! While the world was breathing a collective sigh of relief, the dancers were already back on their toes!
In London β ah, the heart of ballet, I could almost hear the melodies wafting from the stage as I arrived! The Royal Opera House was aglow with celebration, and the audiences were practically bursting at the seams! The Diaghilev Ballets Russes, known for their avant-garde, mesmerizing choreography, were enthralling everyone. I do love a good ballet spectacle, and I could tell this show was quite something!
I snuck into the show, invisible, as Magic Meg watched over me from the shadows. What a wonderful experience! Imagine - the grand chandeliers glittering, the hushed whispers as the curtain rose, and then, the glorious dance! I imagined the performers in their extravagant costumes β silks, satins, feathers β just like we see in ballet today! The stage was filled with life, movement, and emotion, reminding us all of the power and beauty of dance, especially in times of triumph.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in New York City, ballet was blossoming in its own unique style. A little different from the grand spectacle of London, the American Ballet Company, then a young group, was attracting new audiences with their youthful energy and modern choreography. You wouldn't believe the buzz about this company β I can just imagine the exciting, new interpretations and innovative ballets they were putting on!
And, dear readers, just you wait! My blog post next month will be packed full of the latest developments in the American Ballet Company!
The End of One Era and The Beginning of a New Dance World
1918 β what a year for the ballet world! Not just the celebration of the end of war, but a shift in the creative direction of the art form!
With the arrival of Igor Stravinsky, his iconic scores added a whole new dimension to dance! Imagine the power of his music β truly, a game-changer for the art form, not just on December 12th, but for the decades to come! His ballets like The Rite of Spring, oh my! Such intense emotions, dramatic stories, and yes, just imagine the beautiful pink tutus he would have been inspired by!
