Hello darlings!
It's Emma here, and guess what?! I'm back from another absolutely magical time travel adventure. My pink tutu is still twirling from the thrill of it all, and Magic Meg, my pink-sparkling Shire horse with her golden hooves and flowing white mane and tail, is already whickering for more. This month, we journeyed all the way back to 5th May 1920, a day overflowing with exciting developments in the world of ballet. And you know how much I love ballet history! It's so fascinating to see how the art form has evolved.
But first, a quick update from my own world! Last week, I performed in a charity event for "Save the Theatres". We had such a wonderful turnout - all proceeds are going towards keeping the magic of live theatre alive! And I'm even more thrilled to announce my next show is in the gorgeous, historical theatre in Derby. It's the perfect location to celebrate our love of the stage, wouldn't you agree?
The Power of the Past: 5th May, 1920
This time, my time travelling spirit took me straight to the heart of Paris, the epicentre of dance back then. The French were truly pioneering in ballet, weren't they? It seems the French just have that innate flair!
Now, you won't believe what I saw: a captivating ballet production in Paris. It featured the legendary Tamara Karsavina, a true diva of the era. I've seen photos of her but she's so beautiful and graceful in real life, I felt completely transported by her performances. Imagine, a dancer with such incredible poise and technique. It was a delight to watch! She performed the leading role in the Ballet Russe production, of Stravinsky's "The Nightingale" (and "Petrouchka" in the evening!), which included beautifully whimsical costumes by Leon Bakst and gorgeous choreography. It was pure enchantment. The atmosphere was so electric, and everyone was spellbound.
Just picture it: the vibrant lights, the hush before the performance, and then the glorious music sweeping you away into a world of pure artistic magic! Oh, and darling, have you ever seen such wonderful ballet shoes! They are the ultimate in stylish pointe shoes. I even managed to snap up a beautiful pair for my collection. You'll be seeing them on my next blog post! My leather rucksack on my back is getting quite heavy with these vintage treasures.
Fashion Forward: Ballet Style
You know how much I adore beautiful ballets fashion! I loved seeing how fashion-forward they were back then! In 1920, women's clothing was moving away from the restrictive corsets and layers of the Victorian era towards simpler, more streamlined silhouettes. Imagine swirling fabrics and effortless grace!
Even dancers had an incredibly modern look with short, sleek skirts that made their movements so free and powerful. It was just captivating to witness this shift, this artistic evolution in the way people saw themselves and their art.
A Glimpse into the Future
The world was so full of excitement in 1920. We were on the precipice of a whole new decade filled with revolutionary change and a bold embrace of everything new and exciting! Think jazz, think flapper dresses! Just like ballet was making huge strides and reinventing itself, so was fashion!
It’s such an exhilarating thing to feel that sense of change and creativity coursing through the air, like it's in the very atmosphere we breathe! You know, I believe that time travel has a beautiful effect on us all - it reminds us that there is always so much beauty and history to be discovered, celebrated, and absorbed into ourselves. Just like ballet itself keeps changing, adapting and finding new ways to capture the human spirit.
Ballet: The Universal Language of Our Souls
One thing that stays constant, through the decades and even centuries, is the timeless power of ballet. Its elegant form and powerful movements, the stories and emotions conveyed without a single word… it's a truly universal art form, touching the heart of everyone! It's no wonder ballet is such a popular choice of art form!
Don't Forget: Share your thoughts!
What would you like to see me time-travel to next? And tell me, are you already a proud owner of a pink tutu? Share your pictures with me at
Until next time, darling.
Lots of love, Emma
P.S Magic Meg is napping in her stall, munching on carrots. You should hear her snore! It’s quite something! She can't wait for our next adventure! And neither can I!
