Hello, my darling ballet bunnies! Welcome back to another month of Pink Tutu Travels, the blog that takes you on a whirlwind tour through ballet history – all while wearing a fabulous pink tutu, naturally! This month, we're whisking ourselves back to December 12th, 1920. Grab your champagne flutes (pink, obviously) and your dancing shoes, because we've got a whole host of exciting ballet news to uncover!
It's been a busy month here in the world of pink tutus and time travel. My trusty steed, Magic Meg, is looking resplendent in her sparkling pink coat – her golden hooves gleaming under the December sun. I swear she positively shimmers with excitement when we set off on these adventures, which is always a lovely way to begin the day!
This month, we're venturing into the heart of ballet's roaring twenties! And what a time it was. There's a real sense of vibrancy in the air. I can feel the energy buzzing around me as I watch a young dancer practicing his pirouettes in a charming little ballet studio – the smell of old wood and leather so strong! He's dressed in the most darling attire – his satin tights positively glowing in the candlelight. And the music – oh, it's a symphony of elegance and grace.
Now, my darling friends, I know you're dying to hear about what's on the bill this month, and let me tell you, the ballet world is absolutely blooming!
Firstly, let's talk about London.
Oh, dear London, what a darling haven of artistic wonder! It seems as though a plethora of captivating ballet productions are vying for the hearts (and pocketbooks) of theatregoers. I must say, it is quite tempting to stay and enjoy the shows but, of course, a Pink Tutu Traveler must be adventurous! So off to the countryside, for now.
I have it on good authority that the Royal Opera House is showcasing the exquisite "Coppélia," a ballet as charming as it is intricate. I must confess, my eyes practically sparkled as I imagined the intricate choreography and vibrant costumes. This truly was the place to be if you wanted a taste of the high-society world of ballet! And oh, how the audience was positively glowing – you wouldn't believe the chic hats and delightful frocks!
Meanwhile, across the city, the London Coliseum is showing off the bold and beautiful “Pagliacci." This Italian opera, based on the infamous “Commedia dell’arte” characters, was a captivating spectacle with captivating characters. I found myself deeply captivated by the drama of the production, although I’m quite fond of a good tearjerker! It certainly is a night to remember.
As a ballerina in the 21st century, it’s easy to be jaded when the history of ballet appears as something ‘new’ when I attend my own classes in Derbyshire. You can truly see how history influences the way we dance! So much is repeated and replicated, it makes you appreciate the true pioneers and revolutionaries in ballet like Pavlova, Nijinsky, and the greats of today’s stage! I’m so inspired!
And now, for some juicy tidbits:
Did you know that 12th December, 1920 was also the day that the incredible Anna Pavlova was performing in Amsterdam?! Can you imagine? The most enchanting dancer of her age, dancing under the enchanting glow of a Dutch night sky? I'm quite envious, if I'm honest! She must have brought an aura of absolute magic and ethereal grace to the stage! And speaking of beautiful women, did you see the fashions? Absolutely ravishing – think feathered headpieces and dazzling sequins, all inspired by the elegance of the ballet world. I may have been tempted to purchase some items, but alas, I must leave those Parisian and Amsterdam delights to the more adventurous souls among you! I am but a humble time-traveling ballerina, who doesn't want to end up with too much baggage! My back would ache terribly. I don't have time for that. I prefer wearing my ballet shoes and pink tutu!
Speaking of baggage, it seems as if I’ve fallen in love with my leather rucksack again. There are so many magical memories trapped within its depths. Each time I travel, it gathers more and more stories! Every show I witness and costume I marvel at gives me more material to tell you. Oh, what adventures I will write about on my next Pink Tutu Travels blog.
Well, my lovely ballet bunnies, that’s all for this month's blog! We’ll see you again in January! Until then, don’t forget to spread the love of pink tutus everywhere you go! You can catch me again, monthly, on www.pink-tutu.com or in your local theater where you might see me dancing, performing my way through time – and with any luck, perhaps some tutus too!
Yours in twirling and sparkles,
Emma, the Pink Tutu Traveler.
