Hello, darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, your monthly dose of ballet history and whimsical escapades! It's September 9th, 1922, and I'm channeling my inner flapper, darling! This month, Magic Meg and I galloped back to the roaring twenties, where the Charleston was all the rage, and the world of ballet was in the midst of a captivating evolution.
This is blog post number 3141, for those keeping score! I know, right? A little number-crunching never hurt anyone, and my pink-tutu-wearing readers like to keep track! Each month, I meticulously document my travels through time and share it all with you on my website, www.pink-tutu.com. My monthly trips, darling, are funded by the wonderful ballet performances I give. I love the stage and sharing my love for dance, especially when it means hopping through time. Now, back to our time travel!
Magic Meg and I arrived at the London Coliseum, which, in 1922, was a buzzing hub of entertainment, especially ballet! The iconic building was newly refurbished, and it had a palpable air of excitement, even for us time travellers. It's one of my favourite London spots; I could happily spend days exploring the theatres, galleries and shops that the capital has to offer! This building, however, has always been extra special. The Coliseum, darling, held a special place in my heart as a childhood venue. Magic Meg likes it too because she loves those old, regal cobblestones!
Today, a show from the newly formed "Coliseum Ballet" was on the agenda! Imagine a troupe of ballerinas in billowing tutus, with the music swelling, the lights gleaming, and the audience entranced. A perfect combination, if you ask me! The choreography? Full of charm, darling. Graceful movements and effortless precision, showcasing the best of classic ballet, with a touch of modern flair. I must admit, a tad more flamboyant than what I'd find at the Royal Ballet in my own time, which makes it even more thrilling. I snapped a couple of photos to bring back to my time to show everyone. After all, I'm never afraid to show off a little ballet history!
What I especially love about travelling to this time period is the vibrant mix of fashion, especially in the ballet world. It's such an amazing visual feast, with a touch of flair that just speaks to me. Imagine this: a chic Parisian dress adorned with feathers, delicate tulle layered with chiffon, and, of course, sparkling embellishments, creating an eye-catching tableau! Talk about elegant and effortless.
It wasn't just London that was buzzing with ballet. The ballet world was global, darling! You wouldn't believe the ballet happenings on September 9th, 1922! Let me spill the tea:
On the Other Side of the World: * The Imperial Ballet, later known as the Bolshoi, was staging an awe-inspiring performance in Moscow. Can you imagine? Ballet at the heart of the great cultural epicentre of Russia! My collection back in my time includes ballet programmes from all over the world and they just are incredible! My pink tutu would never survive those long trips though, and so it stays safe at home!
Parisian Glamour: * The Opéra de Paris was showcasing its own brand of artistry in the French capital, while simultaneously attracting dancers and audiences from all corners of Europe. Paris truly is a magnet for elegance.
Now, talking about fashion… you might wonder what I brought in my trusty leather rucksack. *Well, I knew just what I needed. * First stop was to the wonderful Harrods. A beautiful old shop! There is nothing better than getting lost in the beauty of the fashion aisles, picking up the best pieces to bring back with me. I found the perfect pair of vintage shoes, perfect for dancing in a pink tutu - oh, you just can't go wrong with some stunning 1920's style! And a silk scarf, of course - the colour, darling? A gorgeous pale pink, naturally! Perfect to complement a ballet-themed outfit. The perfect addition for my vintage ballet-inspired wardrobe, eh?
Before my time travel took me back to Derbyshire, I slid into a cosy Parisian cafe, nestled among charming cafes on the Seine. I enjoyed a dainty afternoon tea. Everything had such beautiful presentation, darling. Little sandwiches, pastries, lemonade - and all topped with lovely edible flowers! So charming!
I was completely enchanted by my Parisian adventure, just soaking up all that Parisian style and beauty. I've truly become enchanted with ballet’s evolution in the 1920s. Ballet fashion? Extraordinary. All in all, darling, my time travels continue to inspire my work, my creativity, and my love for this enchanting dance form. I cannot wait to see what else time has to offer. Stay tuned, you never know where Magic Meg and I might land next!
Until next month,
Emma
