Pink-Tutu.com Post #3247: A Dance Through July 1931

Hello darling dancers! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things twirly, pink and time-travely! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina with a penchant for pink and a love for the magic of dance history.

This month, we're whisking you away on a whirlwind journey back to 7th July 1931, where I, armed with my trusty pink tutu, am hopping aboard my dazzling pink shire, Magic Meg, with her shimmering golden hooves and cascading white mane and tail, and heading off on a time-travelling ballet adventure. Now, strap in, darlings, as we journey to a time when the world of dance was buzzing with excitement, brimming with the very essence of creative expression!

As I click-clack my way through the cobblestone streets of London, 1931, I can already hear the tantalising tunes of a glorious ballet season sweeping through the air. My backpack, stuffed with sparkling diamanté earrings, feather boas, and perfectly preserved ballet programmes, is practically overflowing with the delights I'll find today.

What exactly was thrilling London’s theatre-going audience in 1931? Well, a brand new ballet season was in full swing, and what better way to kick off a season of dance than with a double whammy of world-renowned ballet performances at the world-famous Covent Garden?

The programme that evening features two ballets: "The Blue Bird", a stunning spectacle that transports you to an enchanting fairytale realm of mythical creatures, enchanted forests, and captivating music. It is a dreamlike adventure, the kind that transports you to a world where anything is possible. Now that's the sort of ballet that sends my pink tutu twirling with delight!

Following the whimsical wonders of "The Blue Bird" comes a piece that's sure to capture everyone's imagination: "Les Sylphides" by the great Mikhail Fokine, a masterpiece of ethereal beauty and graceful storytelling. These ballets showcase the brilliance of Russian choreographer, Fokine, who dared to challenge traditional ballet by introducing new interpretations and innovative dance sequences. His revolutionary ballets made waves all over the world, and for us here at Pink-Tutu, it's just the right amount of enchanting inspiration.

So, darling dancers, with the thrill of those world-class performances buzzing around us, what else does a fashionable ballet blogger like myself look out for on a grand day like today? Fashion, of course! And believe me, London 1931, did not disappoint! From the striking geometrical lines of Parisian fashion to the elegant elegance of British tailoring, the era truly defined glamour and grace. The fashion magazines were buzzing with articles on the latest ballet trends, discussing the revolutionary designs by Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes", where costumes featured bold geometric designs, vibrant colour schemes, and exquisite detail. Even the shoes were a testament to creative daring - silvery, sleek and just begging to be danced upon.

And, oh, did I tell you about the dancewear? They weren’t as easily accessible back then as they are today! Imagine, for a moment, darling dancers, a time when finding the perfect tutu wasn't as simple as a click on a website, but a real journey of discovery. Now, I might have the benefit of my time-traveling skills, but you can imagine how exciting the anticipation must have been to finally purchase your perfect dancing tutu and pointe shoes in those days!

As I sip on my delicately scented tea at The Ritz Hotel, taking in the vibrant social buzz of high society, it’s clear that the excitement of the ballet season is not just contained to the theatre. Everywhere I go, from chic Parisian boutiques to London’s bustling tea rooms, the whispers of “The Blue Bird” and “Les Sylphides" drift around me. I've already started my hunt for some of the 1930s-style costumes for my next blog post – oh, you won't believe the feather boas and fabulous vintage tiaras I found on my last jaunt! They’ll make my little heart, and your eyes, twinkle with joy!

Speaking of which, my dear readers, remember to keep your eyes peeled for our Pink Tutu Contest next month! The theme? Well, you know we love all things sparkling and pink here at Pink-Tutu.com, but to celebrate all the magical possibilities of ballet, this month’s competition will focus on “Your favourite ballet memory.” I know there must be a gorgeous story hidden in your heart, whether it be a dazzling ballet show, a breathtaking dance class, a childhood memory, or a simple twirl on a sunny afternoon.
