Pink Tutu Time Travel: September 1932 - The Ballet Whisper of the Parisian Nights!

Welcome to my Pink Tutu Time Travel blog, dear readers! This is post #3261, and today we're galloping through history with my trusty steed, Magic Meg, to land in the heart of Paris on 9th September 1932. Just the thought of those glittering Parisian lights sends a little twirl of excitement through my very being!

Oh, the excitement of time travel! My pink leather rucksack is prepped and ready for all the wonderful ballet discoveries I’ll encounter. I have to say, I'm just a tad obsessed with this beautiful pink, hand-stitched, tulle creation. It twirls and spins perfectly on Magic Meg's back! And she does look ever so glamorous in her sparkling pink livery, even the hooves have a bit of sparkle to them. Of course, there is always a dash of pink in my wardrobe, no matter which century I'm visiting, even if I have to get creative with blusher and fabrics. It's my motto: "More pink is always more"!

This month, my lovely blog will take us to the heart of ballet in the Parisian salons. The year is 1932, and oh how it’s all swirling and whispering about the ballet season. I just can’t wait to share this beautiful journey with you!

Now, let’s rewind the clock a little!

As soon as I arrive in the City of Lights, it is ā€œbonjour!ā€ to the magic of French ballet. Today’s date marks an important chapter in the world of dance, as the famous choreographer, Sergei Diaghilev, the visionary director of the Ballets Russes, has passed away just three years earlier. Diaghilev was an absolutely influential and remarkable man! A man whose imagination changed the ballet world forever with his vibrant and avant-garde ballets that shook up the classic form. His ballets were full of colourful, flamboyant, artistic stories, a real feast for the eyes! I always think of him as one of those people whose influence can really change a person's path, it's like magic how his ideas captured the imagination of so many people. He's a big inspiration for my time travels - what would the world of dance be like without people like Diaghilev?

Paris is the center of all things artistic. My pink tutu is a sure-fire way to catch attention at all the Parisian ballet rendezvous spots, and who knows, maybe I’ll even be fortunate enough to bump into one of the world-famous ballet stars like Olga Spessivtseva or Tamara Karsavina, and yes, maybe even the Nijinsky if I'm really lucky! The world is abuzz with whispers about Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and everyone is enthralled with the ethereal grace of ballerinas who bring to life those iconic white tutus. But, let’s not forget, the era is bursting with creative genius - even the French fashion houses are all abuzz with the inspiration.

Let’s visit a Paris boutique…

Oh, this is my favourite part of time travel – to see what beautiful creations the world’s most famous couturiers have conjured up. The ateliers are just brimming with inspiration, and even the most mundane of items are presented with such Parisian charm and elegance. Just walking down the avenue, I can’t help but notice the striking Parisian ladies and their extraordinary outfits. It's a visual feast of stylish elegance that could inspire an entire ballet in itself, I’m sure. I find it rather thrilling that back in those times the designs would have taken such care and consideration, the quality of the materials, and the craftsmanship are utterly exquisite, the delicate hand stitching, the attention to detail is simply mind-blowing. It’s this little world of exquisite elegance, the detail that sets it apart. The very air is practically vibrating with artistic talent!

Now then, I'm getting awfully hungry and fancy something to sustain me for the evening ahead! This Parisian adventure requires me to make a pitstop to fuel up on the delights of the French cuisine – croissants with chocolate and all the goodies! And if you know your way around, I can guarantee you that a pastry shop can offer some incredible discoveries that have the magic to inspire some ballet moves. Imagine it – Paris, chocolate croissants and the world’s finest ballet in the same place - the perfect way to end a day.

Speaking of Parisian adventures… this very month marks the beginning of a glorious season of spectacular ballet performances. Tonight I’m taking in the Opera Garnier’s magnificent rendition of the romantic and sublime ballet ā€˜Giselle’ – a dance that brings to life a world of love, passion, and longing set against the backdrop of the magical Bavarian forest. There's nothing more special than watching the delicate jetĆ©s and the pirouettes performed with such perfect precision, all executed to the captivating music that tells the story of a beautiful village maiden, who’s betrayed by her lover, and becomes a magical Wilis - the spirits who exact their vengeance. There’s so much enchantment, romance and wonder in this piece and I simply cannot wait to witness this story come to life.

Oh! Don’t even get me started on the fabulous costume design of ā€˜Giselle’, I just love the ethereal beauty of the ballerina's tulle tutus, how they float effortlessly like gossamer threads and flutter like white butterflies. It’s simply enchanting to watch them move through the magical forest in such graceful and flowing movement, especially when their movements become imbued with the powerful emotions of this tragic tale. The dance is so dramatic and engaging and will undoubtedly stay with me, and perhaps will even inspire some future ā€˜Pink Tutu’ blog entries…

Time to prepare…

As the sun starts to set over Paris, I make sure to prepare for tonight’s ballet adventure with the care and attention I'd pay to any performance, adding that special touch of pink to make it unique, even twirling around Magic Meg's back as she patiently waits, before taking off in the night to enjoy this extraordinary, Parisian night out. What will tomorrow hold in the magical world of ballet, or fashion, I wonder, maybe something that will become my new favourite fashion creation. The wonders of time travel never cease to amaze! And just maybe my inspiration for tomorrow’s adventure will be sparked as the curtain falls tonight at the Opera Garnier. I can't wait to explore!

Until then…

Au revoir!

Your pink-tutu loving Emma.
